2degrees’ 4G network now reaches more than half NZ’s population

2degrees has completed the second stage of its 4G network rollout, bringing 4G network coverage to almost 60% of the NZ population over the past year.

The rollout complements 2degrees’ national 3G coverage of more than 97% of the population, including a network of more than 900 cell sites.

Last year 2degrees brought 4G coverage to New Zealand’s largest cities and towns, starting with Auckland, central Wellington, central Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga CBD and Mount Maunganui.

This year 2degrees has focused on bringing coverage to the larger cities, towns and regional areas of the country, bringing the benefits of 4G to more and more Kiwis.

2degrees’ 4G network now includes greater Tauranga, Ashburton, Blenheim, Dunedin, Feilding, Gisborne, Hastings, Katikati, Kihikihi, Levin, Napier, Palmerston North, Queenstown, Rangiora, Rotorua, Te Awamutu, Whangamata South, Whanganui and
Whangarei.

2degrees' Chief Technology Officer Mike Davies says 2degrees has steadily rolled out 4G to the regions this year with a focus on delivering 4G network services to areas where demand is greatest and more towns will follow.

“The second stage of our rollout has been delivered and demand for 4G data is strong with 4G customers using 70% more data on average compared to those using 3G. We’re continuing our 4G rollout across the country and new 2degrees customers can expect fantastic service and high data speeds.”

2degrees will continue its 4G rollout with a further eight areas to come online by early 2016 including greater Christchurch, Cambridge, Huntly, Kapiti, Masterton, Motueka, Oamaru and Whakatane. These areas will bring 2degrees’ 4G population coverage to almost 70%.

Access to 2degrees' 4G network is at no additional cost and operates with all existing 2degrees customers’ data allocations.

I wonder whether this promotional image (taken from here) has any basis in reality. Many of the "circles" are around places that don't currently have 4G on the coverage map!

The more of their own network the better. It will be nice the day its completely seamless so you don't cut out as it swaps between native 2degrees and vodafone roaming. This is a problem for anyone who uses data or especially extended voice calls on a commute, or lives/works right on one of these boundaries between the two coverage areas.

I'm sure if they were deployed as a regular MVNO on vodafone rather than as roaming then it would show as native and therefore roam seamlessly? They would have to axe the broadband zone idea though, which has been a long time fading into the background.

...And we would have made just as much difference to the marketplace as all the other MVNOs have. :-)

Would be nice if their Hamilton 4G coverage actually covered all of Hamilton.
I live in Glenview in Hamilton, 4G coverage drops off past about Melville.

Then again, when I'm at home, I'm on wifi, so who cares, other than claiming to have Hamilton covered is only partially true.

I was thinking in terms of the technical network setup, so the same as it is now but instead of roaming, have a MVNO broadcast from vodafones towers - so devices just swap between them, not caring whos tower it is.

Or is this not possible to both broadcast a MVNO network and have your own native coverage too? I know theres different ways MVNOs can be set up.

Forgive me if this is technically impossible.

Surely its near time that they pull the vodafone roaming? I thought it was just a stopgap measure till 2degrees had built their own network.

Always good to hear about expansion plans! However it would be preferable that they perfected their coverage in area's that they claim have 4G before they move on. I work in the Christchurch CBD near Hagley Park in a modern building right by the window. I'm lucky if I can get 4G at all during the day and when I do it quickly drops back to 2G until I've given up.

Agreed. I can't remember the last time I noticed my phone flick over to roaming.

Something to look forward to later this year then, if I read the press release right.

Well you guys obviously don't go to parts of the country where 2D don't have any cellsites then...

There are huge tracts of the countryside with not a single 2D tower within cooey, like all of Northland except Whangarei.

They must be slow up north then. I have glanced at my phone in tiny places like Mt Somers, Culverdon, Murchison and Springs Junction and had 3G coverage on 2degrees in all of those places.

Good to see Oamaru on the list! Both Vodafone and Spark have 4G coverage here now, so will be good to complete the trio :)
Will also give me yet another reason to stay with 2degrees.

You don't even need to go very far. Simply take the motorway south from Auckland and you will roam in and out of 2degrees coverage before you hit hamilton. In the area with the new waikato expressway just south of Taupiri you nearly drop out, because the coverage in the area wasn't designed to cover this area of the expressway, only the old SH1.

Have a look at http://gis.geek.nz/infrastructure.html and you'll see the huge difference between 2degrees towers and the competition. Its this last bit which is the most expensive, because you're covering minimal population but huge areas, so the return is very poor. Building a mobile network is hard and covering the remaining population is the hardest part especially when you aren't making anywhere near as much money as your competitors.

The large markers are 4G licensed. The dots are regular 3G/2G towers. Here's a screenshot of 2degrees own cell coverage in auckland/waikato:

And this is Spark:

still waiting for auckland north shore 4g coverage to be finished.  close to unusable during power cuts, which auckland is renown for.  (usually about 3 megabit normally, but pages don't even load ..)  have backup vodafone stick which works, but kind of sucks having to top it up to have stable data.  even 3g performance on vodafone is a lot better than 2degrees too.   it seems they haven't even enabled dc-hsdpa for 3g on 2degrees.
