Just received:

2degrees officially enters the broadband market today with the launch of its first consumer plans. Two residential broadband plans are now available – 80Gb for $69 and an unlimited plan for $89. New and existing 2degrees Pay Monthly mobile customers will also receive a $10 discount on a bundled package.

2degrees has also partnered with Sky NEON to give customers unlimited access to content for the first six months.

A number of optional services are also available – fibre customers can super-charge their speeds from $10 and all customers can bundle their home phone with unlimited New Zealand and Australian landline calls from $15 per month.

2degrees CEO Stewart Sherriff says 2degrees can now offer customers the full communications service they have been waiting for. “Today we see one of our key strategic goals come to fruition - providing both mobile and broadband services to our customers. Becoming a full service provider is something our customers have been asking us for - particularly as Kiwis continue to embrace more data intensive lifestyles and move to UFB fibre services,” he says. “2degrees’ purchase of Snap earlier this year has allowed us to accelerate our entry in to the broadband market using Snap’s incredible national network infrastructure. With residential and enterprise customers now able to access 2degrees broadband, and business customers shortly, we are now well positioned to compete in all segments of the market to support our customers’ growing digital needs.”

Mr Sherriff says it’s almost six years since 2degrees changed the way New Zealanders think about mobile and he says it intends to do the same with Broadband.

“Kiwis have told us the broadband market is too complex – there are so many different plans to choose from, it’s hard to navigate through the jargon and actually work out what is right for them. They have also told us they want a reliable connection, quality customer service and, most importantly, simple pricing and plans. From today, we deliver just that and make the choice and process simple for our customers.”
Mr Sherriff says announcing a partnership with Sky NEON is also a major coup for the company.

“In a world where content is king, we’re excited to partner with Sky NEON, a premium content provider which will see our customers get unlimited access to a world of leading movies and TV on demand – and it’s all on us for the first six months.”

NEON General Manager Dave Joyce said he is stoked about the partnership with 2degrees as it makes it easier than ever for more Kiwis to escape & enjoy great films and TV. Combining that with 2degrees’ broadband offering meant customers are getting a fantastic value offering.

“Whether 2degrees customers are fans of great drama like Game of Thrones, blockbuster movies such as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy or looking for some fun escapism in the form of The Only Way is Essex, they’ll find there’s something for all tastes on NEON.”

Mr Sherriff says another key feature of 2degrees’ broadband is ‘best connection’.

“We will always ensure customers are on the best possible available connection to their home – even fibre, for no extra cost. And if a customer is already with 2degrees broadband and a better connection becomes available, we’ll let them know and offer them an update for free.”

2degrees broadband will be available with a couple of plans including 80GB plan for $69 and unlimited plan for $89. The TV streaming service NEON will be available on 2degrees broadband plans for first six months (valid until 6 th September). An additional $10 discount is available for 2degrees Pay Monthly mobile customers and an optional home phone bundle for unlimited NZ and Australian land line calls from $15 p/mth is also available.

Does anyone know how this affects existing Snap customers? Will we be migrated to the new plans? If not can we migrate without signing up to a, or extending our existing, term?

PS: Tried to view website but it seems to be crashing on the phone, and blocked from work PC

Their new website seems a little buggy.. a few error messages coming up this morning when trying to access their broadband-related pages.

We're currently a BigPipe customer but am currently considering changing to 2Degrees, I used to be on them for mobile until my new job forced me onto Spark. As the partner's on 2D it looks like we would get a discount of $10/pm if we switched, but I can't seem to see any answers about BYO modem, their site seems to suggest that we would need a 2Degrees one, which obviously I wouldn't be too happy about (or want to lock in order to avoid paying the fee) as we have a perfectly good Zyxel VDSL modem at present.

I imagine the Snap performance is quite similar to BigPipe - Having a brief overview of their forums doesn't seem to suggest too many negative posts, anyone have any recent experiences between the two - Perhaps switching from one to the other or vice versa?

You will remain on your grandfathered plan if you don't change. You can move to a new plan in your portal at http://secure.2degreesbroadband.co.nz by clicking change my plan

Their website is under load and seems to be having issues. Im getting lots of page load errors.

BYO Modem seems to be something they are 'looking into' according to twitter.

Snap performance is very good - i have 200mbps UFB and everything downloads as fast as the server will provide it to me. For a comparison with bigpipe, a friend went from snap to bigpipe and everything was roughly the same, except they said twitch.tv performance got worse. One anecdotal answer anyway.

Did it migrate our Snap accounts to the 2degrees portal? If you don't know all good because I'll go hunting for answers when I get home tonight ^^

EDIT: Seen this thread http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=90&topicid=177252 which answers my questions

I would probably be keen on this if I could BYO modem and be contract free.

I would be only saving $10 a month compared to Slingshot as I have my cellphone with 2Degrees...but most of that would be eaten up by the connection fee, and would only see benefits after 9 months which isn't worth it.

Also a pretty bad idea if you want fibre...seems like they're limiting speeds to up to 30Mbps

No, that's not the case; have a look at the other thread linked to in the post above yours.

EDIT - and this quote from 2 Degrees CEO: "Customers in areas where ultrafast broadband is already available can upgrade to plans offering 100Mpbs download speeds and 20Mbps upload speeds for an extra $10 a month, or to plans offering up to 200Mbps speeds for an extra $30 or $50." (source http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/70601261/2degrees-launches-home-broadband-plans)

I and others have commented on the poor advertising of this, though - for example when a current Snap user selects the option to switch plans the only option at least initially is for 30/10 fibre (either 80GB or unlimited), but apparently there is the ability to select all all other speed options up to 200 though it's not obvious where this information is (I'm waiting for someone to explain its location!).

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

It's pretty confusing really.
Arguably more confusing and complex than other ISPs where the speed options are clearer from the outset

2D says "We'll give you the fastest you can get for a flat price" which is nice and simple.

BUT then if it turns out you can get UFB they present you with the slowest possible option and ask you to pay more for faster speeds.   That's the exact opposite of what they initially say.

so rather than having 2 plans, they actually have about 8+

I don't really get how that is simpler than "Here's a list of plans for you to consider with varying speeds. Pick whichever one you want"

Give them time, The front line staff most likely have only learnt of the new changes today. CSRs are usually one of the last to know of confidential info that is under embargo.
