I lost ADSL yesterday on my Naked ADSL service. Solid orange light on Orcon Genius. Checked with spare ADSL modem and no DSL lock on that either so seems to be a problem with the physical line or cabinet modem. I can't test for ring tone and noise etc as it us a naked DSL line.

I rang Manila CS and went through the usual script questions. Some odd phone line questions given its a naked DSL service but hey, just doing the script.

Its been raised to second tier support and 3 working days which is later next week.

Are there any engineering tests I can do on the line in the mean time? Should there be 50v there or is that not present on naked service?

Feeling cut off in Whenuapai with relying on my phone 2G data service :)

Any help appreciated guys.

PS tested at main jack point, no other connections, no filters.

There won't be 50v on a naked DSL circuit.

The only thing you can really do until the tech arrives is rule out your modem. Take it to somebody's house and try for sync or bring another modem to your house and try for sync.

If you know what you are doing you could also rule out internal wiring by connecting the modem right at the ETP if you have one. You'd need to take a jack point with you to the ETP punch down the line onto the jack and plug in your modem. if you get sync the fault is in the house...........probably a bit further than you want to go, just suggesting it incase you were desperate and couldn't wait for the tech.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. I had tried a spare modem present loaded with my Orcon login and password, which works normally, and it failed as well.

I am back working now. Yesterday a text from Orcon said the fault had been passed to Chorus. Very impressed that this morning, Sunday at 9am, the Chorus guy turns up and says fault is fixed which it is. The problem was one of the pairs had come out of the punch down block in the roadside cabinet.

So really impressed with Chorus response. Now if Orcon cold just repatriate CS back to New Zealand they would have a steller service.

Are you sure? I had naked last year and plugging in a phone resulted in a "disconnected" tone; presumably there was still power on the line too.

Some naked broadband circuits have intact tone on. These will of course have 50v. Not tone = no volts. Tone of any kind will give you 50v.

Interesting. Might try putting a phone across the line tomorrow and see. Shouldn't cause any problems should it?

Shouldn't cause any issues.

These are 3 types of Naked broadband.

1. True naked broadband. Only jumpered to a port. Silent. No volts.
2. Naked broadband with intact tone. Jumpered to a port and EN. 50v
3. And this one is rare but you can get naked broadband with a number assigned. This number will only take incoming calls and you can also call 111 etc. again jumpered to EN and port. 50v

Does the type relate to previous use of the pairs or is it done as part of installing a naked connection?

Interesting! It's easy to assume that every provider does the same thing, but of course that's not always the case in the real world.

There is no hard and fast rule really. It differs by provider.

Some will allow a previous intact line to be used for naked broadband including intact tone. Some will require that same circuit to be jumpered to the port only. No tone. Giving a true naked BB.

So its down to the provider or ISP telling Chorus what to do rather than Chorus deciding how best to connect?

Chorus have a service order type for every scenario. It would then be up to the service provider to choose the applicable service order type which fits with what they want their customer to have.

Using the 3 naked BB options I mentioned earlier. There would be 3 codes from chorus to cover each one of these scenarios. Orcon Spark and Vodafone might each choose a different option. Or they might all choose the same.

That's interesting. Should have asked the Chorus tech what type I have. Will next time so thanks for the heads up.

Chorus techs are pretty onto it for fixing faults. :)

Spark is the only one that do "naked" DSL with a number assigned (reason being ICMS).
