2degrees have two Fritzbox modems available, the older 7360 and the higher specked 7490.

The main differences that I can see are that the 7360 has 2.4ghz wifi, usb 2.0 ports, 2 gigabit and 2 100 megabit lan ports. The 7490 has 5ghz wifi, usb 2.0/3 ports and 4 gigabit lan ports.

Having done my research I phoned 2degrees to sign up. The lady said that as I as I can only get adsl they'll send me the 7360 modem. I told her that I wanted the 7490 because of the extra features and she said that she would make sure I got the 7490. So I signed up.

The modem arrived today, but it's the inferior 7390. So I called 2degrees and was told I can only have the 7390 because they only provide the 7490 to vdsl and fibre customers. I told them about the promise to send the 7490 and after asking to talk to a manager I was told I could have the 7490 for an extra $199 and that they couldn't gaurantee it would work on adsl! I said I wanted to cancel.

I'm now waiting for them to phone me back to tell me if they'll allow me to cancel!

Sorry 2degrees but this is ridiculous!

TBH your request is a little ridiculous wanting the top spec modem thats meant for the higher speced fibre plans for your adsl connection for free

ISP's generally offer a lower spec device for ADSL/VDSL and the lower spec fibre plans. they have the option to upgrade but it comes at a cost, be it a 1 off fee, or a longer contract.

the person who said about getting the higer spec one was probably misinformed and gave you the wrong information

sorry but if you want the better device pay the money

This is the first time I've encountered an ISP offering different modems and simply assumed that the 7360 was just older stock. ADSL and VDSL cost the same so I can't see why adsl should customers get an inferior product.

Because you are signing up to an inferior product / technology.
I expect if fiber lights up at your address, and you change over to that, then they would send you the higher spec router.

After all, it is intended as an internet connection device, and for you the 7360 meets the requirements that they are providing it for just fine.

....and yes, you probably are subsidizing faster connections, but then you knew that already.

7390 is dual band and Gigabit. It's hardly a vastly inferior device over the 7490. The 7490 is really just a newer spec version of the 7390 with AC support.

I'd be very happy getting a 7390 for an ADSL2+ connection.

What is your use case that you need the 7490? As it is not going to make an ADSL connection go faster. If you need more gigabit ports buy a network switch.

not if the CSR was wrong or misinformed or even pressured into offering the higher speced device

its no different to getting a pamphlet in the mail with one price on it only to go instore and find out it was a miss print and not being able to get said price.

I believe this is correct, if the OP signed up because they were lead to believe by a member of staff they would receive a product and did not receive the one that was advertised to them, then recourse should be that they either receive the product as described or can cancel the service receiving a full refund. I believe that would be in line with consumer law (though IANAL and am not going to go and find the specific clause regarding claims by seller right now)

My opinion is that it's not needed for the internet service, but if the claim is true then the course of action is clear.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but the 7490 supports wireless AC as mentioned above. No, this won't speed up ADSL, but it will give a *big* speed improvement over the 73xxs for your local wireless network between machines if it's your main wireless AP. If you do any kind of local sharing - files, media, whatever - it's a huge difference.

Additionally, Snap used to allow you to select, regardless of which internet technology you were using, which modem you wanted. I received the 7490 on a 24-month ADSL contract for free. Or maybe it was a $50 fee. I can't remember which now, but it certainly wasn't anything like $199.

The new 2D process is rigid and stupid. It's not simple at all. I hope they learn.

Would have to be a VOIP router if the OP wished to use VOIP for voice.
