Hello All
I am just dropping a line with a little bit of advice for V.D.S.L customers who may not have done everything possible to eek all the speed they can out of their connections, all of the speeds i shall mention are downstream as that is really what was of interest to me.

I live in Christchurch and inquired about V.D.S.L through snap! N.K.A Two Degrees I was told that according to Chorus I couldn't get it as A.D.S.L 2+ was the best I could do in my area, I had an A.D.S.L 2+ connection previously and was pulling approximately 1.8 Meg per second, which was to me O.K but I decided to go to V.D.S.L being that I am a heavy user of the Steam Gaming Service and of course games are getting absolutely monstrous in size these days - at least the ones I like are generally 25+ Gig. One of the peeps at 2degrees got a confirmation report done and ended up managing to arrange a V.D.S.L install done even though my S.N.R was 12 and my line attenuation was 20.

After my line was switched to V.D.S.L which we only incidentally found out from the ISP when the A.D.S.L just stopped working I went in and picked up the Fritzbox 7490 -
( note this doesn't normally happen but I have a disabled wife with a heart condition and we had to have at bare minimum a working phone system ).
I got everything hooked up and finally managed to get Sync - but the speed was terribly disappointing and I ended up with getting basically what was a very fancy IP phone system and 1.6 Meg per second downloads.

Recently I installed Fritz!OS 6.30 and this made a massive difference and my box then went from 16700 approx max attainable to 19300 max attainable  and whats more the speed of the connection always seemed to be around max - nicely done A.V.M. After doing some further reading I discovered something mentioned called a Master Splitter having been with Telstra previously and then with Snap from that point forward I didn't know what was on our phone system, I had a look at the demark and found something that said it was a Splitter but it was for cable services and the phone line was not connected to it but previously having had a line capturing alarm and various extensions I decided to get a Splitter installed anyway just to eliminate any further house wiring issues.

Now having had the Master Splitter Installed and subsequently finding out that we now no longer have a P.O.T.S line which was news to me as I did not know from speaking to two degrees that we were now on naked broadband I have discovered exactly how much difference all that extra stuff has made when my speed improved by 100.734% after the Splitter was installed. My S.N.R is now wavering between 11 and 12 and my line attenuation has dropped from 20 to 16, maximum attainable rate is now 38741.

If you haven't had a splitter installed get one its well worth the 199$ fee.

Now if anyone else has any info on how I can possibly increase this speed further or improve on the S.N.R or line attenuation I'd appreciate knowing about it.

In the opinion of many Geekzoners (including me) all VDSL installations should include a mandatory master filter/splitter - this often makes a huge difference to VDSL performance.

When talking with 2D support about my install, I asked about a filter, and the response was that it is not necessary with VDSL due to operating at a lower frequency :\
Am not technical in this sense, so had to take her word on it.
I had a filter for the ADSL which I removed, and plugged the new box straight into the wall....presume the filter for the ADSL shouldn't be used for the VDSL...or are we talking about something totally different here altogether? FWIW - my current max attainable rate is just over 30000....so wonder if there is any point in doing anything about this anyhow?

Since when did Snap/2d stop full installs with master filter?

Noise margin is set by Chorus at 12dB on a standard connection - i.e. all standard Chorus connections should have a reported SNR of 12dB. If it is varying more than 0.3dB or so there is something that is causing the noise floor on the line to vary. Often it's just the circumstances of the area and nothing needs to be done, but check if it lowers significantly in certain weather like heavy rain or high wind as it can indicate a loose or corroded joint on the line.

There are many many posts here on why a master splitter should be mandatory for all VDSL installations, and yours is another classic example. Isolating all the internal old dodgy (and alarm) wiring inside the premises is critical to getting a good connection.

Not true. VDSL works at a higher frequency than ADSL, which is why you should have a VDSL filter / splitter installed.  Most ISPs install VDSL filters routinely - 2D does not.

EDIT:  VDSL stands for Very-high-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line

I had a filter for the ADSL which I removed, and plugged the new box straight into the wall....presume the filter for the ADSL shouldn't be used for the VDSL ...

Correct. Plug-in ADSL filters / splitters should be removed if you are using VDSL.

Maybe (hopefully) I am recalling that conversation wrong and they did say "higher" rather than "lower" - likely as my main recollection is that it is just different frequency :)

So is there any way to determine whether a filter will actually make a significant difference? Or is it a situation where the filter will always make a significant difference?
And if it should be installed; how do you go about getting one installed after the fact?

Having a VDSL master filter and a new cable to your VDSL jack will improve performance at least 90% of the time, sometimes dramatically.

A lot depends upon how far away your home is from the exchange or cabinet, and how good your existing "telephone" house wiring is. (In NZ it's usually not good.)
The only time that you don't need a master filter is if you have a new home with new wiring and only one wire leading to one telephone jack - not a common situation.

To get a master filter fitted "after the fact" either ask your ISP to arrange it (Chorus charge about $200) or contact coffeebaron if you live in his area.
