Something doesn't seem right with MyRepublic.

I'm on the MyRepublic gigabit plan in Dunedin with a fixed IP address and using HFS ~ Http File Server to share some very large hubble images (eg., heic1206a.tif, 643MB, 20323x16259 res image), with a colleague down here who is also on MyRepublic gigabit fibre.

He is only able to download from me at 1-2MB/sec. If he downloads with multiple connections that gets up to 5-MB/sec. Testing from a machine on the local network is also vastly faster. If I use speedtest.net I get download speeds of up to 600Mb/s down and 400MB/s up, so again, not an issue with equipment at my end.

This isn't a new issue, I noticed the same problem accessing files from home when I was in China and Japan last month.

Friends on fibre with other ISP's are getting massively faster uploads.

MyRepublic says no rate limiting so perhaps something is misconfigured at their end??

What are other peoples experiences?

Cheers,
Mark

Can't say anything for sure, but every single MyRepublic rep I have spoken to has told me ardently and repeatedly that plans above 100Mbit down are a waste, as there simply isn't the capacity for that transit speed. I guess the Southern Cross Cable is at capacity, as are all the back bone cables.

Of course it could just be that they're full of a certain waste material. I'll leave that up to you to decide though.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

There's enough capacity if you or your ISP pay for it...

Nope. Nothing close.

There is as much capacity as an ISP buys. If an ISP doesn't buy enough capacity then yes, speeds will be slow.

Sure - it looks like it goes up the country and then back down, so Dunedin to Dunedin is not treated as local.

Tracert isn't very informative apart from that:

Speedtest gives over 600Mbs down and 400Mbs up. Downloading of Windows updates, and several gigs of Apple updates + XCode 7.1 betao n a MacBook Pro I set up last week felt subjectively speedy (nice to see we can now build and run apps on our own devides without having to pay for a developer subscription too).

MSDN copy of the server 2016 technical preview is coming down at 40Mb/sec. I don't think it is a capacity issue based on that. They may be constrained with limited international bandwidth but that doesn't explain the super low speeds I'm seeing Dunedin-to-Dunedin. Curious to hear what performance other people on MyRepublic are actually seeing - not just in Dunedin though that is obviously of more immediate interest.

Cheers,
Mark

We have been with MyRepublic in Christchurch on a 100/20 unlimited plan since January.
Speedtest.net results have been 95/19 every time I have tested.
There was a guy working on the cabinet at the end of our street yesterday and today our speeds are 105/21. Coincidence?

Speedtest.net indicates that we are in Auckland when it selects the default server.
Ping time for Auckland is 20ms and increases as I test servers further south; Taupo-26ms, Wellington-30ms, Chch-37ms, Dunedin-38ms.

I am probably wrong, but it looks like MR sends everything to Auckland and then sends it out from there.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

They put their customers behind CGNAT by default so I guess trunking everything up to Auckland means they have fewer expensive routers to deal with.

What actual speed do you see with various kinds of downloads and uploads? The speed test won't tell the true story since it will almost certainly be given high priority to make them look good :-)

Yeah, found that out the hard way after joining. Had to pay $20 to get a real IP address which isn't a lot but I was and still am annoyed they didn't mention that before I joined. Trunking to Auckland sucks for Remote Desktop (feels slower than when I Remote Desktop to a VM in Azure), but I'm more interested in people's actual up and download speeds (not speedtest results since that will be being artificially distorted with prioritisation to make then look good).

Interesting, I'm glad to see some evidence supporting my suspicions about why I told family and friends not to go MyRepublic
Any ISPs can honestly say they have no rate limiting, but they won't tell you how much bandwidth they are buying into each handover or how congested it is.
Hope you're not on a 24 month contract :)

I just downloaded a 1.1GB file from one of the Canterbury University servers, using "Down then all" download manager in Firefox.
Download speed hovered most of the time between 10-12MB/s. There were occasional drops to about 8MB/s.

I get similar - about 5MB/s single thread, 12MB/s with multiple threads.

If anyone on fibre in Dunedin is reading this and is on a different ISP I'd be interested to see what performance you get too.

Cheers,
Mark

Okay. I've asked them directly since it looks like not many people here are using MyRepublic in Dunedin and able to give me results. Will see what answers I get.
