So i finally got around to calling orcon just now, apparently they disabled my IPv6 without asking me because it was causing disconnections for some customers.

the guy asked me why i wanted it enabled and i just said because why not, and that if it caused issues i'd call up and get them to turn it off again.

so what i want to know is if they just turned everyone's off or just the Christchurch customers, cause im sure someone else would have moaned on here before me if it was nation wide :P

Hi Hamish

Chorus are in the process of fixing their ISAM's to support ipv6 on all their line cards. We ran into issues with ipv6 and the White Genius modems.

Once this is done we will begin to reinstate ipv6.

No ETA at this stage sorry.

In related news, why the hell is IPV6 not being rolled out faster in NZ?

Normally NZ leads the way, why is the entire country not dual stack.

Lias: In related news, why the hell is IPV6 not being rolled out faster in NZ?

Normally NZ leads the way, why is the entire country not dual stack.

Are there any ISPs that offer IPv6 on residential UFB connections these days? They would definitely get my custom next year (when my current VF contract expires)

Snap/2degrees have had IPv6 on residential connections since 2011.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

because it's not a very big deal right now.

If the best answer you can give when someone asks "Why do you want IPv6?" is "Because why not?"

then that just demonstrates there isn't really a big need for it right now.

If you are on Orcon xDSL you probably have IPv6 now and just not noticed :-) There are still some areas to roll out but 80%+ done.

Still working on UFB. Have run into an issue which we are working with our vendor to find a solution.

I am an Orcon Customer specifically to avoid the CGNAT that other ISPs have. Surely IPV6 is a solution to getting rid of CGNAT?

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

longer term, yes.

But currently there are still heaps of things that don't work with IPv6, and so you need to run dual stack, which means still having Ipv4, which, if you don't have enough Ipv4, means still having CGNAT.

the other way avoid CGNAT is to pay for a static IP - and most ISPs who use CGNAT allow you to do this, with the exception of Flip I think, (and it probably still works out cheaper than being with Orcon.)

All sorted for you. You now have your /56 IPv6 allocation. Just make sure your devices behind your modem have Ipv6 enabled on them.
