Wasn't sure whether this should go in the 2Degrees forum or the VoIP forum.

You can plug any old analog phone into the FON ports on a Fritz! and it works right, so does that mean it is emulating an analog line? If so, does that mean it will work with a burglar alarm that is only compatible with an analog line?

VOIP is designed for voice. Not for fax or data signals. It may work but as you have mentioned that this is for an alarm system I personally would not even entertain the idea.

Most VOIP providers contract themselves out of this sort of stuff. Here is a snippet from the 2Talk VOIP T&C's:

You accept that 2talk might not be compatible with non-voice communications equipment such as home alarms, fax machines, Sky Digital and St John Alarms.

2Degrees is simular:

Home Phone Plus cannot support all types of the following products:

Fax machines and faxes;
Monitored home or medical alarms; and
Pay TV boxes.

The other problem is that VOIP needs power to work, whereas a standard telephone line would power itself.

Someone more knowledgeable in the why will hopefully chime in, but my understanding is that no this won't work (at least not reliably) and you're much better off looking at getting a newer alarm that is actually designed to work over IP.

As to whether it'll work will depend entirely on the VoIP hardware, VoIP network and type of alarm. Even if it does work I'd never recommend it.

Only a couple of hundred to get an IP module installed, so that sounds much safer.

Im in the industry and VoIP will transmitt 0 to 9 easliy but A to F it wont for some reason which due to the reporting scheme of Contact-ID it falls over very fast.
Ditch anyform of IP over the Cable/DSL and look into RadioNet or a 3g solution. http://radionetmonitoring.co.nz/.

If CABLE does the Node go down also,
With DSL as long as the line is good it would stay up i would assume.
Fibre will need a UPS also to maintain connection, and that is even if the Fibre hub has a UPS to keep the link up.

Cable/HFC will almost always go down with a power cut. (lots and lots of signal amplifiers and other various stuff need power)

DSL should work unless there is an extended power cut and the cabinet is not backed up within approx 4-7 hours.

UFB should stay on indefinitely as exchanges should be power redundant. (Everything between the OLT in the exchange and the ONT in the house is passive requiring zero power)

All these require modem/ONT/router to remain powered throughout for them to work at all.

No need to waste money for UPS. The unit already have backup battery than can last 3-4 days while on GSM.
