So I am with Spark currently on ADSL (no fibre until end of November) currently averaging 15mbps (don't laugh please!) and 2 degrees want to sign me up for $79 per month for unlimited and will swap me over to fibre when UFB installed within next couple of months.

Question is do I take Frizbox offered or keep my using my Asus DSL N66U and have no contract?

When I compare the 2 units not really a massive difference between the 2 units so just keep my asus one?

Any plans for VOIP? I find the ATA on the fritzbox very useful. I guess the other thing which may or may not matter to you is that 2 degrees will support the fritzbox whereas I think you'll be somewhat on your own with the Asus if something goes wrong.

The fancier Fritzboxes do 802.11ac. Your N66u only does N. They can also do VOIP.

Not going to voip as we use Viber and Skype.

2 degrees offering unlimited ADSL and UFB once available for $79 per month, no contract and I can use my own ASUS modem/router.

AFAIK the DSL-N66u doesn't support VLAN tagging on its Ethernet WAN port. Due to this it likely won't work on 2degrees UFB unless you can convince them to provision your eventual UFB as untagged.
The fancier Fritzboxes do 802.11ac. Your N66u only does N. They can also do VOIP.
2 degrees say they will let me connect to UFB with my ASUS and I have this in writing, my only question is reading reply from Lorenceo is will my ASUS work on UFB and is it easy to connect or set up?

Unless you can get 2degrees to provision your connection as untagged, no. The DSL-N66U will not work on a normal 2degrees UFB connection. It will work on an untagged UFB connection or an ADSL/VDSL line. VLAN tagging is an option the ISP can select when placing a UFB order. 2degrees will need to provision your UFB line differently to how they do for their other customers to get a DSL-N66U to work.

Is it easy to set up? How long is a piece of string? IMO yes, ASUS units are easy to set up. You just need to know which settings go where, and have equipment which will work on your connection.

Note that all of the above is assuming that the DSL-N66U still does not support VLAN tagging on its Ethernet WAN port. Last time I saw the interface on one there was no option for VLAN tagging on its WAN port. It's possible this may have changed with a firmware update, but I cannot confirm whether this is the case or not sorry, as I do not have a unit to test with.

You should look through the Ethernet WAN settings on your unit to see if it has an option to enable VLAN tagging. It could also be listed as 802.1Q.

Hi Kiwiyorkie,

You are more than welcome to use your own modem to access our services, however please note that support for this is very limited through our helpdesk (i.e. providing settings only). We are unable to guarantee compatibility of all devices with all of our services, so it is important to make sure that your device is capable of supporting the settings required for the service variant selected.

For UFB, as has been previously mentioned in this thread, your device will need to support a PPPoE connection over the WAN interface, with traffic tagged as VLAN 10.

I had a lot of niggles with my DSL N66U on Slingshot - odd VDSL performance issues and drop outs, WiFi issues with a lot of simultaneous connections and weak signal for the far reaches of the house. Firmware updates tended to cause more issues than they fixed and overall I wasn't impressed considering the price of the thing.

I moved to the top end Fritzbox when I moved from Slingshot to Snap/2 Degrees and I am glad I did.

Router is great - gave me better speeds even before the new line was in place and the WiFi has better range and reliability.

So my personal, anecdotal experience is that the Fritz is a much better unit than the Asus.

Thanks for the reply, I have never had issues with my Asus finger crossed.
I do not want to be tied to one ISP supplier through contract or modem as I have from experience that none of them are what they say!
Can you unlock the Fritz box from 2 degrees?

Hi - the router isn't locked to any ISP. You can use it with any one you like providing it supports the line technology you are looking to use.

Just use the fritzbox if you got one.
2D will help you if you have problems with it.

Personally I don't like them because I have had so many issues with the VoIP. But if you use on on 2d its not your problem.

I've had 2 failures with mine -- first was completely faulty box, second the ac adapter failed. Snap/2degrees customer service was awful for the first fault, and great for the second.

But, the fritz is the best router I ever owned .

Almost every router I have owned has had some protocol error ( dhcp/ip routing/netbios resolutions etc) or hardware crash issue .

The fritz is rock solid and guaranteed to give a solid working internal lan. Even though it looks like cheap garbage the internals must be good quality.
