They're raising their prices by 95cents, so its not a lot. Its more the principal.

I'm locked into a contract, will expire come May (ill switch providers then), think its pretty stick for everyone in the same boat that they can raise the agreed upon price (yes its probably in the pages and pages of contract that no one ever reads).

From 2 December we'll be adjusting our Pay Monthly mobile pricing to include a contribution to the industry-wide Telecommunications Development Levy (TDL) so your monthly plan fee will increase by 95 cents. As you are on a $39 Carryover Plan your new monthly plan fee will be $39.95.

I'd be very surprised if they are increasing the rate for those who are locked in to a contract as by doing so they would be giving you the ability to leave your contract.

does it though? I'm assuming theres some clause in the fine print saying they can do this and you cant get out of your contract.

I would love any reason to leave my contract...! I'm on month 18 of a 24 month contract, and for the same price I could get far better value by rejoining.

I am sure you could find a lawyer who would argue that it does.

Telcos don't normally increase the price while you are in a fixed contract period. The only real exceptions to this would be if something like GST changed or Chorus prices were increased by the Commerce Commission or whoever sets them.

Once you are out of contract though you are fair game and they will do their best to.....

Have you asked 2 Degrees if they will sign you up to a new contract period and not apply any penalties? You never know these things until you ask.

And there would have been some very good reason - some benefit to you - for signing that 24 month contract. Be it interest free deferred payment for your phone, or extras to your plan. It's life and changes will often happen which mean that whilst things worked in your favour when your signed, by the end of the contract they might not still be in your favour and there might be better deals to be had.

As graemeh suggested, talk to 2Degrees and see what can be done.

That's effectively what's happening here. The Telecommunications Development Levy that was previously expected to drop a lot next year is now not going to, which means our costs (everyone's costs, actually) are going to be higher. I expect most other providers will follow suit with us and Spark.

Here is the explanation from Spark on what has happened.

The short version is the Government legislated to reduce the levy, Telcos set their prices based on the legislation and then the government changed the rules.

If you are upset at this complain to the Government and your Telco but don't blame the Telco, it is not like the earlier debacle with Chorus charges where the Telcos took a punt that the prices would be at a certain level and in the end it was a different price.

That's why I always go with Spark.

I know that they are going to piss me off regularly, so it doesn't catch me by surprise when it happens.

well if you read, I did say it wasnt a biggie it was the principal of the thing. When skinny can charge so little and give so much, why cant 2degrees just absorb this measly 95cents? Like I said I'm in contract (ive learnt my lesson, never go on a contract to a telco), so I'm forced into this (as are so many others). I dont have a choice, thats my gripe with it.

2degrees aren't really in the same boat as Skinny. Skinny are so cheap because that brand operates off the back of the already built Spark mobile network so it's much easier for Spark to absorb that cost increase. And while it might be a measly 95 cents on one connection... mutlipy that across all connects and see if it still looks cheap! This would be well into the millions of dollars per year not being recovered.

And in fact, Skinny/Spark have raised the price of their pay monthly plans (bearing in mind Skinny is Spark and does not do post paid).
