So I've been told my 2Degrees that the only option I have at my house is ADSL (Not even ADSL2) and my question is, is it possible to improve on this?

I've just moved house from where I had fibre to a house which only has copper lines. When I first set up my modem I was getting roughly 0.20Mbps down and 0.1Mbps up which I assumed was a matter of the alarm and bad wiring in my house, so I installed a Master Filter/Splitter with Cat5e all the way from the demarc point to my modem and am now seeing (what seems to be so far) a solid connection of 10Mbps down and almost 1Mbps up.

I'm very pleased with the speed increase, but even after the improvement I'm currently paying $40/month MORE to have an internet connection 3x slower than what I had previously (30/10 fibre) and it really grinds me thinking of this.

Now that I have a master filter/splitter, is it likely 2Degrees can trial a VDSL connection or am I stuck waiting for Fibre middle of next year? Or are there any other options?

Thanks in advance for any advice. Please let me know if I've missed any important details.

If you're getting 10Mbps down then you are on ADSL2/2+ already. ADSL1 tops out at 8Mbps. It's not really up to 2degrees, generally speaking, as to whether or not you can get VDSL. It's either available in your area or it's not. But ADSL2+ goes quite a lot faster than 10Mbps (24Mbps), so if that's all you're getting it's pretty certain that VDSL won't be available on your line.

ADSL1 = less than 7.6mbps
ADSL2 = more than 7.6mbps

as you are getting 10mbps you are on ADSL2

what you need to do is post your modem stats page, asi it contains your connected speed, your attenuation etc which helps people know more about your connection

you can also ask your ISP for a prequal for VDSL, it might come back ok, or it might not, but given you are getting 10mbps at the moment i think you might me out of luck there.

Thanks for the help. This is exactly the info I'm after.

I'm located in Glenview, Hamilton and I'll post up a shot of the stats page when I get home.

if you are north of ohaupo road and west of garden heights ave then you should have fibre available now

if not you should have fibre available by early to mid next year

I used to live in Glenview, fairly close to the edge of town (Houchens road) and had better speeds than that, so you might just have a really crap pair.

most of glenview is exchange connected but Houchens road looks to be cabinet connected which could expain it

The sync rates indicate your connection is ADSL2+. The 19dB downstream attenuation is almost double what was the previous limit for VDSL (10.8dB), but it may be worth checking the Chorus maps to see if VDSL is available, or asking for a prequal check.

Yes, I checked the UFF map and it's currently scheduled for March 2016, but it would be cool if I can get something a bit better in the mean time. It hurts having to pay more for much, much less haha

Looks like I'll call 2 Degrees and see if they can do a prequal check for VDSL, but from the replies above I don't like my chances!

the one uncertainty about this, is with 998 chorus did announce they are looking to increase the reach of VDSL. It is however anyones guess at how far that would likely happen however.

i reckon as long as he was on 9db snr margin he'd get an "okay" connection with vdsl on that.  ie better than adsl, and probably at least 16 megabit down and more than 1 megabit up... would be really curious to see what it's like if he can get connected.

the drop off on the higher bins is quite significant though, it may not be able to do enough upload still..

Thanks for all of your replies and suggestions everyone!

I've been really busy lately, but finally got around to calling 2Degrees today and unfortunately, I wish I hadn't.

Do they have the same helpdesk as when they were Snap? I found the helpdesk awesome back then and I didn't mind calling at all, but so far my experience has not been good at all (with 2 Degrees) and I don't really want the hassle of having to call again...

I first asked the representative if it was possible if I could get a prequal for VDSL and explained I had a master filter installed and he replied saying VDSL is not available in my area and so I explained that I understood this and asked if it was possible that I could get a prequal for VDSL anyway and he told me that the only way I could get VDSL was if my neighbours had it and they had no way of checking to see if it was possible at my address, so basically I have to go and do all the work myself asking my neighbours so then I could call my ISP back and explain that it's possible? What a Joke!

Then I asked about when fibre would be installed on my street and explained that the UFF website says the estimated date is March 2016, but I've seen them installing it down my street and wondered whether this could mean it could be sooner? The reply I got was "No, our system does not allow us to see dates, only if it's available or not". So again, I have to go and do the groundwork myself to see if a service is available for me?

The 2 Degrees representative called me back and apologised for the wrong information he had given me and that Fibre has been available since 2013. They obviously had my old address on record still even though I called up well in advance of moving and told them I'd be moving from fibre to ADSL (As it's all that's available) and I gave them my new address, but they didn't even bother to update my details even though they knew I was moving?

I also asked if I was able to pre-book my fibre service and possibly have the paperwork and other details sorted sooner, but this was not possible either. I completely understand this and I'm happy waiting, but I just can't get over the lack of help and enthusiasm I'm receiving when I'm actually trying to make it easy to keep me as a customer.

Sorry to turn this into a rant, but its frustrating when I work in a IT helpdesk myself.

Aaaanyway, back on track. It looks like I'm going to have to wait until fibre is available here and then call up and request whichever ISP I choose (May not be 2 Degrees) to start provisioning for fibre. Was worth a shot though! :)

It's a real shame they don't even want to at least check if it's even possible for me to get a better service.

Hey Scrubb,

That doesn't sound right at all, sorry to hear about that experience. If you came through to our Technical helpdesk, this is the same helpdesk that previously serviced Snap, and they have the tools to run checks on addresses and get pre-qual information. If you came through to our Join team however, they don't have access to these tools, as that queue goes through to a dedicated telesales team.

Can you PM us with your address, and if you've got it your broadband account number, and I'll check it out and see what's happened there, and get you some answers on what is available.

Thanks

Ralph ^JOB
