Hi, for about 2 days, my 100/20 UFB connection taps out at exactly 50mbit for NNTP usenet traffic.

I thought it was my provider, so I changed providers, I thought it was my client, so I changed clients, I thought it was my computer, so I used a different one... no change 50mbit max exactly.

PS - I'm not using wireless, and I can still get 100mbit for other traffic.

Anyone else experienced this?

I am not seeing any problems with secure NNTP downloads. I am on 200/200 and just got 110-135 Mbit/s for a download from Easynews (secure.news.us.easynews.com, port 563). If I try after about 02:00, I can max out my 200 Mbit/s normally.

The answer here is simply a big fat no.

Sounds like your Usenet provider might be limiting you. I am able to max out my 200mbit connection anytime.

no issues with usenet shaping on my 2degrees VDSL, can get my line speed 70Mbit

how many connections are you using? whats your router?

You say you changed providers so I would say there's a good chance that no. As above, likely to be the Usenet server.

well he said he changed providers (im sure he is talking about usenet providers here) yet still got exactly the same speed so it kind of rules out usenet provider as the problem, unless he changed to a provider that is just a reseller of the original one, ie you were on giganews and switched to supernews as 1 of many examples.

If there was a change in Usenet providers (not ISP) then I'd look at other things too: any changes in your router? Firmware updated? QoS settings? New user in the house? Streaming being used from a higher priority machine?

Hi UncleArthur,

No limiting of that kind of traffic here, as others have mentioned this is likely to do with the providers/hosts of the providers you are trying to access. Could be a number of things, such as artificial limiting, congestion off our network, possibly even a configuration issue.

A couple of other things that could be worth checking out: Is the speed consistent through different times of the day and different days of the week? If it fluctuates, sounds a lot like congestion somewhere at the far end.

Thanks all for the responses, and thanks 2D for not shaping the traffic! :-)

I'll investigate further at my end. I'll report back once I track the beastie down in case the info is of use to anyone.

PS When I referenced multiple providers, yes, I was refering to usenet providers rather than ISPs :-)

Update, I've still not tracked down the issue. However I have noticed that my first statement of still getting 100mbit for other traffic isn't as true as I thought.

Previously I would consistently get 100/20 on speedtest.net to local servers, however I note that I am not unable to exceed 85/20....weird.

Have you tried restarting your Fritzbox if you're using one?

I recently got UFB, and noticed the other day when trying to download the latest star citizen that I was only getting around 8 MB/s. I originally tested speeds\throughput the day it was installed and within a couple of days of that and always got a rock solid 202/21 for speedtests and around 23 MB/s from steam and well seeded linux isos.

I was confused when I noticed how slow this download was going so tried speedtest again and it seemed to be maxing out at 50 mbps... Tried restarting my computer and was getting the same, so then tried restarting the Fritzbox and suddenly was back up to 200/20. Not really sure what happened, but I'm wondering if I hit some sort of bug with the fritzbox or something? I'm keeping an eye on it to see if it happens again - so far it hasn't. Just something to try I guess.

I'm not testing via wifi, and I had tried restarting my Fritz and ONT.

I've submitted a request to upgrade to 200/20 just as an experiment, so will see what happens.

Anyone know how long it takes to process a speed change request?
