Had Fibre installed yesterday.

The Chorus guys have been great. From the guys that did the wiring from the road, to the technician that spent 4.5 hrs with us yesterday, our experience has been an excellent one.

Unfortunately the speed of the UFB is not so amazing.

I have my iMac plugged directly into the modem router and that is giving us 98/21 every time I do a speedtest.

Via wifi, using the Slingshot-provide Netcomm modem router, I am getting 33/20 on average (sometimes as slow as 20/20, other times as fast as 37/21.

So...upload is as fast on wifi and wired connection, but  download is abysmally slow for what I expect via wireless on UFB - that's more like VDSL speeds.

Don't get me wrong, it's way better than the 8/1 we were getting on ADSL, but it's not good for UFB, in my opinion.

Is there something I am missing? A setting i should change? Should i speak to Slingshot to enquire (the issue being that they will state that I am getting the advertised speed on my iMac)?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

  • you have reset your modem and router
  • your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
  • your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
  • you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

  • Your ISP and plan
  • Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
  • Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
  • Your general location (or street)
  • If you are rural or urban
  • If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
  • If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
  • If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

That would be the issue with the wifi and the modem you have.

We had a netcomm and getting the same speeds via wifi, I ended up getting a router that supported AC wireless.

This is the router i ended up getting.

As per PeterReaders response WiFi is not the ideal medium for speeds. If you're wanting Speed then Ethernet is the only way to go or investing in a wireless access point like the Apple Airport Extreme with 5ghz Wireless AC.

Thanks peeps.

As I say - ethernet connection on Mac is excellent - it was the lower than expected speeds from the wifi router that had me concerned.

I'll probably invest in a decent router as suggested by @tripp above...but I'll leave it until the speeds matter...which at present they don't.

Apart from the drawback of WiFi, my own experience tells me that it does take a day or two for the speed to come up to what you subscribe to.

Your connection is working perfectly with the hardware you have and there is absolutely nothing wrong. 30Mbps using 2.4GHz WiFi is a pretty good result in your average environment.

If you want faster speeds over WiFi you will need to upgrade to a router or buy a standalone AP with 5GHz support. More importantly your hardware needs to support 5GHz - if your tablets or laptop don't you will not see any benefits in doing this.

WiFi is not and never will be a replacement for cabled Ethernet. Is a complimentary offering.

Also to maxamise Wifi speeds setup the router to use a channel that is the least used.
There's a free APP on Android (sorry no iPhone app that I'm aware of) it will scan the air for access points around you and show you what channel they are using, then using that information set your access point to a channel that looks free or not used.

I had the same situation, the Netcomm router you get with Slingshot is not great for wireless.

I moved to the Asus RT-AC68U and would highly recommend it. Just a word of warning dont get the DSL variant that tripp linked, it doesn't support vlan tagging - which you will need.

Now I can get the full speed of my fibre connection on any 5ghz device in my house.
