Can I use my own ADSL modem on Orcon Genius if I don't want any VoIP services?

As the title states basically... I just signed up for Orcon Naked ADSL, but the modem they sent me was broken. It's going to be mid next week I guess before a new one arrives, so am I able to use any ADSL modem for just internet? I talked with support and they said no, it needed to match the modem serial number on their end, but I think that may just be for VoIP services?

Edit: about the modem itself in case anyone knows how to fix it... when I first plugged it in it worked fine, but at one point I moved the power point and now it just constantly makes this clicking noise when plugged in, and all the lights flash. Support just recommended I get a new one sent out.

There is no requirement to use there modem other than using anything else and you will get NO support

the hard part for you is the easiest way to get your password is by using your existing modem.....
with that a no go you may be able to get your password out of the call center but you are more likely to get it from one of the M2 staff (orcon's parent company) on here

I can't get the password from their modem as it's broken... It's different from my account password, and hard coded into my modem? Seems... Silly.

It has it's advantages the main one been that you normally don't need to know it...
the hard part is that the call center staff are trained to read from the book and are unable to work solutions on the fly.

my response would be "Ok sir what we can do as a temporary measure as you sound like you know what you are doing, is that
I will give you your password so that you can use your existing modem until the replacement arrives.
However do bear in mind that our staff will be unable to help you should you run into issues"

I called this morning and they were ok with giving me a password, however in using it I'm getting a "username or password error" in my modem.

A couple of things to check

username: <user>@orcon.net.nz
password is Case sensitive! so 11U4AaQW is different to 11uaaqw
