2degrees Email - Still POP Only?

Hi all. My father is using an email account provided by 2degrees (ex Snap) and I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that access is still POP only? I can't find any reference to email services on the 2degrees web site and I vaguely recall someone suggesting a while ago that 2degrees is no longer providing an email service for new broadband customers, so I guess the chance of them switching to IMAP is pretty much zero?

If he absolutely has to change his email address then I will recommend registering a domain name for the purpose of future-proofing, however a change of email address would be far from ideal.

Just get him a Gmail et al account and dump the ISP email service. For personal email that's all the future proofing you should need.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I'm not comfortable with that solution because Gmail is a free service and, at least in theory, they could pull the plug at any time. In my view a domain name is well worth the registration fee for the freedom to change email providers at any time.

Having said that, a change of email address would be seriously disruptive so I would prefer to stick with the ISP's service if possible.

Really? I don't see google or MS etc going bust and removing free email, they have millions of users.

It would be more likely that the hosting or dns on your domain would go before gmail etc.

Also there have been a few domain host that have had interesting issues where people could not transfer their domains away from.

What I have done in the past. Reg @gmail, or @outlook account, setup forwarding to the new address, however both gmail and outlook will pull in mail from the pop account if you set that up in settings.

This way all mail still gets to you and when he replies people can update their address books to his new address.

Takes 10 minutes to setup and never have to worry again

Going by what's happened in the past, ISP's are significantly more likely to break email than large mail providers like Google or Microsoft that are used by business.

Go to outlook.com (Exchange) or gmail.com (IMAP), set up an account and configure them to pull mail from the POP3 server. That way you can still receive mail at the old address while getting a better mail experience.

We do indeed have IMAP, on port 143 with SSL off, full email address as the username for authentication.

No SSL/TSL for email? So you shouldn't use it on any Wi-fi networks outside of your own home. Thats pretty lousy for 2016 if you ask me.

@2degreesCare Ralph, Out of interest how much mail server storage to you provide for each user?

IMAP support is all good and well, but without sufficient server storage it is not much use.

Using ISP email is pretty lousy IMO.
