I currently live in Wellington after growing up in the HB, and have a iTalk line in the Hawkes Bay to keep in touch with friends and family at local rates.

Problem:
The phone number is in the 929xxxx format, a very unusually looking number for Napier to some as most start with 842,843,844,845,834 or 835 - Of course I know about number allocation and NAD and all that, but some of the people who I have given my number to are confused by the number as it does not look 'normal' (Of course to a Wellingtonian or other places with TCL 9xxxxx numbers look normal as TCL lines start with a 9) but i've even had someone think the number was premium rate (Like 0900) and people are reluctant to call it.

Anyhoo, what I am wanting to know is, is there any way to get a seemingly 'normal' looking number on the Slingshot line? The only way I have can think of to achieve this would go something like:

Have a new Telecom line connected to the (Currently disconnected, but previously used) second line pair going into my parents house in Napier, in my name, and then almost immediately port the number to Slingshot. Of course once I paid the connection fee, and a months line rental i'm looking at easily over $100 just to get the number.

Is anyone aware of an easier way to achieve this, without the cost? Is there some way I could "Customer Link" a Napier number on my Telecom account (For my Wellington TCNZ landline) and then port that to Slingshot or something like that?

No adam not really, Telecom obviously had all the local numbers in every region until recently, this is now changed with other carriers having the ability to offer local numbers but the numbers assigned to each carrier are different ranges to those of Telecom, it really is just a matter of education, but to answer your question the only way to get what you call a normal number is to port a Telecom Number as you suggested...someone from the Slingshot team can correct me if I'm wrong since this is their forum and they don't me posting here Wink

Point to note Telecom will only port if a Carrier has local numbers in that region already

The customerlinked number is the way to go, I dont know if you will have luck ordering it from telstra clear however.

I would see if you can get it put on your parents telecom account and then port it to your choice of voip provider. then pay your parents back for the cost of it when the bill arrives - a hell of a lot cheaper then a new telecom account.

Actually, do the same, but with faxability, that has a lower monthly charge and those numbers can still be ported.

- put the first bill in their name too, then have the account transferred into your name
- "dual number"

I don't believe you can port dual or fax ability numbers, as they are not as such 'connected' as a line in their own right.

I am sure I read that someone was able to port their faxability number over, and it makes sense you should be able to since a lot of people use it and want to move to voip as well.

Telecom are quiet happy to port a number so long as the telecom account holder is the one authorizing the move to the new provider, doesnt matter whose name is on the new providers account it seems.

Slingshot were all ready to port the old number from the flatmates old line onto my italk since he had given the authorization when we set it up (and I was foolishly thinking that us asking to change the line to a naked dsl connection would have resulted in them changing the line, not provisioning a new one from exchange to the house) - so its worth as shot. Worst case your parents have a months worth of dual number or whatever on their bill.

Sucks to not be able to get faxability, IME that means no caller ID either.

Yes, that is all good, but to get it ported, the number would have to be Customer Linked first. With dual number and fax ability, they are not connected in the same manner as Customer Link, or a 0800 number, which are hosted at the local exchange. Dual number and fax ability, are both services, and not stand alone numbers, and as such are not connected at the exchange, and as a result, IIRC they cannot be ported.

Simply call the Telecom "New and Move" team on 123. Ask them for a CustomerLink number off the Napier exchange, and give them a random number (such as your parents') number to terminate calls to temporarily. Port the number over straight away -- the cost is around $0.66c per day (so if you port the number straight away, it will usually take a few days, costing you about $3-$4 plus whatever the gaining telco charges for porting the number.

My first CustomerLink port cost me $5.90 from Telecom and $17.50 from WxC, for decent looking numbers on a central Auckland exchange. I never had a Telecom account prior to that, it was simply a brand new account just with CustomerLink. The number was active within about 1 hour of requesting it :)

I have successfully ported a Fax Ability number to VFX. Telco's have to allow ANY number allocated to a customer to be ported out.

So you didnt get stung for $49 to have a telecom account set up?

Nope, that only applies if you get a physical landline connected. Admittedly, all my CustomerLink accounts were under company names, but I imagine the same procedure applies for residential accounts. Free - and $49 setup fee for the landline setup.

Hi there,

Yes maverick you are correct - the only way to get a 'normal' number is to port it to iTalk

Yes, both services my parents would love to have, but wont be able to get until the NGN roll out in Taradale, which I don't think will be anytime soon.

Wow, Slingshot's first official post under my thread! Nice

Firstly, would they customer link me a Napier number even though I live in Wellington?

Secondly, I assume I would need the permission of the account holder of the number I temporarily customer link to before they connect it?
