Hi all,

 

 

 

So I've taken the plunge and am nearing the end stages of switching from 2degrees to Myrepublic

 

My 2degrees plan was 100/20 UFB, and my new myrepublic plan is 200/200 UFB.

 

Interestingly my new myrepublic connection has been enabled on my 2nd port on my ONT, so right at this moment I have both connected.

 

If I want to use the 2D connection, I just set my PC's gateway address to my 2D router, and if I want myrepublic, I just set my PC gateway address to the myrepublic router.

 

This has provided a unique opportunity to run speed comparisons where it is true that all other things are actually equal.

 

 

 

My speedtests have been with speedtest.net and my findings are that the myrepublic option is faster for NZ and Aus (generally as not counting Christchurch it seems) - but then you'd hope so being 200/200 vs 100/20.

 

 

 

However, the myrepublic absolutely TANKS for download on other international traffic - is this normal?

 

 

 

Results as follows: (done at 10pm tonight)

 

National tests:

 

Test to thecloud (Hamilton NZ)

 

2D:111 / 24

 

MR: 155 / 212

 

Test to Spark (Auckland NZ)

 

2D: 109 / 24

 

MR: 192 / 212

MR: 42 / 212

2D: 111 / 24

 

MR: 205 / 212

 

 

 

Tests to other international places:

 

Test to Time Warner Cable (Los Angeles, USA)

 

2D: 48 / 15

 

MR: 13 / 56

 

 

 

Test to Altantic Metro (New York, USA)

 

2D: 33 / 9

 

MR: 7 / 67

 

 

 

Test to Vodafone UK (London, England)

 

2D: 13 / 5

 

MR: 3 / 4

 

Test to InsaneWorks (Tokyo Japan)

 

2D: 22 / 3

 

MR: 6 / 1

 

 

 

Does that look right, because if it does, then it kinda sucks.

 

I also note that restoring from my cloud backup (crashplan based out of Aussie), with 2D I can sustain about 70mbit/s restore speed, with MR it sustains about 6mbit/s

 

 

 

hmm.... I know it's nothing this end because if it was the national traffic would suck too.... might have to call them tomorrow and have a little chat.

Im not sure that anyone doing their research would pick My Republic

I've been getting no speed on my republic since midnight last night. Tried power cycling the modem many times. Also tried a factory reset but no luck. Their website said there were outages at 630pm last night (Friday 13/05) but didn't say where. I called their tech support line but all the person said was that they'll call me back to troubleshoot.

It actually seems to be quite difficult to find a provider that doesn't do contracts IMHO. Bigpipe would be nice, except they're not in Whakatane. 2Degrees, no idea (too lazy to check). Some of the smaller ones do e.g. Unlimited Internet though they seem to get a bit of stick around here, if they're contract free......

 

 

 

Mind you I'm on MR and only yesterday I did a normal speed check at 8.30pm yesterday and got something like 105/21 (on a 100/20 plan), when their speeds apparently go down the commode. Also joined when they were fairly new and those depressing graphs weren't around then. Besides, even during those evening troughs can still get Netflix (well usually, but that's a different story......)

Really it comes to this:

 

MyRepublic truly sucks. But even if you're contracted you've got an exit strategy since they claim you "will" get these speeds, and their network is purpose built to be the fastest. Here is a screenshot of their FAQ's page:

Now, their network is not purpose built as I've seen cases where a 200/200 plan will get 10/20 during peak (worse than the Krapi Vodafone cable) but I've heard rumors they're cost-cutting and only have 1gbit handovers at each POP. If you want speed then Spark, BigPipe or 2degrees are for you. If you use the ufbswitch promo with BigPipe as well as the link in my signature you'll get 2mo free + $20 credit.

Correct about the 1Gb/s handovers, although I believe some are in the process of getting upgraded to 10Gb/s. So, I'm going to stick around and see how much difference that makes. I agree with you though, the claims on their website are misleading.

The aforementioned phone answering is part of it.  I did some volunteer work at the nearby YMCA campsite and they've got an Inspire Net rural connection.  I didn't want my wireless gear to interfere with theirs so gave them a call.  They answered quickly, very quickly transferred me to one of their techs, who was happy to talk 5GHz frequencies and answer some of my questions.

 

I'd started signing up with 2Degrees (I had to forefeit a $15 connection fee) and when I rang them to un-sign-up -- 10 minutes on hold.

 

With static IP (Inspire Net IPs are "subject to change with notice") included, they're essentially the same price as 2degrees for 100/20 ($10/mo extra for a static IP).  They're local-ish (Palmy is an hour away).  They're not bad corporate citizens -- I still remember the peering wars and Telecom of old.  I prefer "small, good customer service" over "enormous, take forever to answer the phone, and slightly cheaper." I work in IT.  $10/mo extra isn't going to break the bank.

Interestingly my Ookla speed tests on MR 100/20 plan are all 101-105 down and 20.8-21.4 up.  I had some issues but has thought it was router and Wifi.  I will now keep an eye on Truenet results as my 12 month term expires in two months.  The plan I'm on unlimited 100/20 with phone still seems good value, as long as the speed and reliability holds up.  I'm not really keen on Spark, Vodafone, Orcon, etc.
