Hi all,

I've just switched from Spark to Orcon and being in Dunedin received the Fritzbox 7490 to handle the Gigatown speeds. The summary of offer said I was to receive Orcon Genius and one of the features I liked about that (being a bit reluctant to drop the copper line) was the ability to 1) receive voicemail as an email attachment and 2) use the Genius Go.

1) receive voicemail as an email attachment

Given I didn't receive the Genius Black or White do I set this feature up using the Fritzbox? I don't want to meddle here in case this is not supported. Is there any documentation around to ease this process?

2) Use Genius Go

I am using the username and password that I use to log in to My Orcon and it keeps saying one of them is invalid? Is this app still current and working and why won't it accept me? I am trying at work - do I need to be at home?

Many thanks in advance

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

  • you have reset your modem and router
  • your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
  • your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
  • you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

  • Your ISP and plan
  • Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
  • Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
  • Your general location (or street)
  • If you are rural or urban
  • If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
  • If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
  • If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

You should call Orcon with these questions.

I'm pretty sure (there was a post on here a few months ago that I can't find) Genius Go isn't actually a current product offering now and is only available on older legacy connections.

I'm on Orcon's Gigatown with the 7490 modem.

1) receive voicemail as an email attachment
I used to receive an email with a WAV attachment but lost this feature when changing to Gigatown. However, the 7490 supports been an answerphone and has a feature where it can email you missed call details. Haven't had a good look to see if it will send you the message or not.

2) Use Genius Go
When I was talking to the Gigatown helpdesk ages ago I also asked about this and was told that their new backend doesn't support Genius Go. There is no current timeline of when or if it will be supported.

Hope this helps.

If you want to use the 7490 for voicemail, this is how you receive voicemail's as an email (per 7390):

Telephony > Answering Machine > Additional Settings > Tick "Send messages via e-mail" > Enter Email

You'll need to set up Push Services to send emails:

System > Push Service > Sender > Enter SMTP Details

You need to be using your Fritz Box for voicemail rather than your provider.

Can't answer the Genius Go questions sorry.

Has anyone used the Fritzbox 7490 with Orcon VDSL?

Does it still support the VoIP/SIP functionality that the NetComm NF4V currently provides?

Hi all and thank you for all the replies. I am very disappointed in Orcon and to be honest I have decided to go back to Spark. The reasons are:

  • Their lag time is 3-4 times as bad as my old ADSL and I dont enjoy getting scorched online
  • Although I'm on Gigatown I'm lucky to get over 600Mbs and commonly in the 400s no matter which location I choose. It is actually slower to ping Dunedin and Christchurch
  • I'm getting IP Packet fragmentation error on my PS4 and the router doesn't allow me to change the MTU
  • The Fritz.box transmits on the 5Ghz frequency slower than on the 2.4Ghz frequency no matter what settings I choose. My kids laptops are brand new Dells with AC wireless and it wont even ge above 40
  • I have to reset the router daily as the wireless crashes
  • While a minor point the router looks like a really bad childs toy

I'm over it, I just have to put up with it for 5 more days until I switch back. Sorry for wasting everybody's time. For the record I've found out the Genius App is a myth for new connections so a step backwards and I couldn't even get the router to be an answering phone even with the instructions from the earlier post.

For the record I'm not a negative person but if I'm spending my hard earned on tech I expect it to work at least close to what is advertised.
