Just moved from Skinny to 2degrees and I'm just wondering why I can't use data while I'm on a call with my iPhone 6s.

I used to be able to do both when I was on Skinny.

I see that sometimes I can actually use the data, but it happens very occastionally (also it gets cut off too).

Is there an option that I need to set it up?

My partner uses an iPhone 6, and she is also having this problem so I know it's not just my phone.

Any tips on this? Would hate to go back to Skinny just for this.

Thanks in advance.

Is 2degrees forcing voice calls to 2G?

No, but if you were on 2G, then yes that's exactly what would happen.

No, I don't believe so. I think I am getting this HD voice feature because the call quality has vastly improved compared to 2degrees.

I live close to Auckland CBD, so I pretty much get a good 4g signal everywhere.

Is this just me experiencing this issue?

There are no voice calls on 4G yet; you are forced down to 3G during a voice call, but data sessions are retained and will be moved back to 4G after the call completes. I haven't heard any other reports of data stopping whilst on a call. Of course that doesn't mean you're the only one but it probably does mean that it isn't widespread. Where are you located, specifically? Auckland CBD is well within the 4G coverage area.

I'm on 2degrees and about 50% of my calls drop to 2g during the call and I lose my data connection until the end of the call when it will go back to 3g. This is all over Auckland and has been the case with my last 3 handsets. All my calls start out on 3G (the only time I end up on 2g is if in the middle of a call) Did not happen when I was on Vodafone so assumed it was just a 2degrees thing.

Yep, this is exactly what I'm experiencing.
Glad to know I'm not the only one. Looks like 2degree issue.
Can a rep from 2degrees explain this?

I am not a 2d rep but reasons it could happen

A fault of some sort - there could be a 3g handover issue moving from 1 cell site tot another

the cell site you are on for 3g is at its limits for number of active sessions. so the carrier will force some sessions off that cell onto another. it could be in this situation that you are forced to 2g

last (I don't think it will be this) some overseas carriers do drop calls to 2g it saves the 3g space for other users wanting to use data as most people wouldn't notice data stopping during a call

Anything I suggest or say is my own thoughts and not provided by anyone else unless stated

Can you lock phone to 3G only and see if issue still occurs.

The issue still occurs even the phone is locked to 3G.

I am pretty sure this is to do with 2degree network rather than a handset.

Tried a couple of android as well as windows phones and I see the same issue happening.

This is really weird though..

My best guess is that 2degrees cuts off people's mobile data during a call to free up some space on their 3g or 4g network..

This has never happened when I was with Skinny or Spark.

Call 2D Customer care and see if there are any provider settings updates for your model of handset, that could be the issue.

I can also confirm this happens to me all over the city (auckland). Thought it was a phone issue but obviously not due to symptoms matching exactly what you're describing.

Hi @wlfkfgkwlaktka

If you brought your phone over from Spark/Skinny your phone may not be picking up our U900 3G signal (it should connect to 2100MHz ok) so it may kick down to 2G.

We'd need details to check.

Can you PM us details including -

Your number

Time of call/dropping to 2G

Exact location at the time

Number you were calling at the time.

Thanks

It happens to me as well. But only sometimes. So I think it is a signal / capacity thing. Not a policy.
