her only internet access for a few years is via her crappy little iphone which runs out of juice after a few minutes on the net.

she has mobile w/2 degrees and 1GB internet. she says she has spotify and knows it's not worth it for her - currently paying around 40 a month. i don't know how she does it so been looking at better options for her.

was thinking a tablet (she knows how to use them) with a $69 pm unlimited deal i found or $59 pm 40 rollover gigs w/flip. she doesn't have to plug in a landline. both have $49 install fees and need a modem.

now thinking since she's already with two degrees prepay mobile - maybe the 59/95 deal would be good for her ($77 a month over two years) + free install and free modem?

have i got this right or any other suggestions. not keen on a long contract for her but she might be ok w/it and anythings better than that phone of hers surely.

home internet so she has better access via tablet and then she can go on cheaper mobile prepay plan. scrub spotify all together.

sorry for not being clear. was looking for hours last night, got distracted by this site and all info going in one eye and out the other. think i missed the small print on the 59/95 deal too.

ok the skinny deal looks good too and available in her area.

what kind of tablet? in other searches i seen many that weren't 4g. at the time didn't think it was relevant but would be with the skinny deal?

No it would not be relevant with the skinny home broadband deal. That broadband uses 4g in its modem/router (Skinny modem), it then supplies a WIFI signal for you to connect whatever device you want to.

ie. Cell tower <-- 4G --> Skinny modem <-- WIFI --> Tablet

The only reason to get a 4g tablet is if she wants to use it outside the house (away from the skinny modem which sounds unlikely) without connecting to someone else's wifi or tethering her phone. The tablet would need an extra sim to do this also.

EDIT: Reading the skinny page I can see how this is confusing with wording not indicating how the technology works.

I have Skinny Broadband and it is great. I had one glitch last week where I forgot my admin password and the router insisted on a software upgrade but Skinny helpline was great and very helpful. Answered within 3 rings and a real person in Kiwiland!

Over all it has been pretty much turn on and set and forget.

How much data does she need? I'm guessing she's on a low income? What would she use the tablet for? Would she be better off spending the money on a mid-range Android with a battery that doesn't die after 3 minutes?

Data cost wise:

If she needs more than 3GB/month of data, then Skinny Home Broadband is probably the cheapest option. $55/mo + a prepay pack for her cellphone

If 1GB/month is OK, why not stick with a 2degrees prepay $19/month pack, and tether the tablet to her phone? $19/mo. This is what my Mum has been doing for the last two years -- she tethers her desktop to the cellphone.

If more like 3GB/month is needed, a prepay $19/month pack (1GB), and a 12GB 6-month "zone data pack" would cover her provided she lives in a 2degrees "zone". $35.50/mo.

no she's just old fashion, works long hours and likes to pretend everyone on the internet are unemployed bums. but she's the one who can't keep up and gets frustrated on her crappy phone, lol.

a better phone is an option too. some good suggestions and info here i'll take up to her in a couple of weeks. thanks very much all.
