Due to the fact that Downer/Chorus have made a cock-up of my installation today (someone forgot to ask for permission to climb the pole 4 weeks ago), I was wondering if I could connect the FritzBox to my VF Cable modem and use it as a wireless router.

The unit is the FRITZ!Box 7490 and the connections on the back are;

DSL/TEL - FON1 - FON2 - FON S0 - LAN1 - LAN2 - LAN3 - LAN4

Has anyone else done this?

Thanks

Yes you just need to configure it so LAN1 becomes the WAN port.

Thanks sbiddle

It's worked to an extent but I don't have internet access.

So I've connected to the Fritzbox, set "Connecting to a cable modem" and plugged the cable from the VF modem into LAN 1.

Modified the connection settings to configure the IP address manually taking the old setting from my current router and using the VF DNS entries.

After saving the change I perform a "Check Internet" and it comes back as being successful

But I still don't have any internet connection either wired or wirelessly.  The wired and wireless LAN appears to be working (found the iPad and FireTV).

I've rebooted; the modem, the router, the PC/iPad, flushed and renewed the DNS, set the Obtain IP and Obtain DNS config on the PC to automatic but still no internet connection.

Have I missed something?

Im using my old 7390 as an access point (using help provided here). Working with the Huawei that Voda sent wonderfully and zero dropouts at far end of house. So if they do send you a router that is a later option for you.

Nothing looks obviously wrong to me. Can you ping the Fritz LAN address? If yes, can you ping 8.8.8.8?

Is you cable modem acting as DHCP server for your network? The Fritz Box comes with the DHCP server enabled so you need to turn this off if the cable modem is already doing this.

I don't believe so. The cable modem is pretty dumb and on TCL/Vodafone the connection is a fixed IP address.  DHCP is controlled in the router.  There is no user configuration of the modem and I haven't had this issue before when switching the router.

Thanks

Is your cable modem a Cisco DPC3008?

If so, I have used four different routers with it (not a FritzBox), with no problems.

this appears to have worked.  Saved the profile, factory reset, re-entered the config, IPCONFIG release/flushdns/renew and restarted the Fritz.

All good and ticking over very nicely thank you.

I've literally only just seen your comment and I actually laughed out loud (the wife thinks I'm mad)!  That would be quite a feat wouldn't it!  The internet connection is that fast it time travels!!!

Finally got my UFB installed on Tuesday (not without issues) and the Fritz Box was just as annoying going back to the 2Degrees settings.  I ended up having the do a factory reset "hack" using a corded phone into the FON port because it lost the ability to DHCP and would not accept any WiFi or LAN connections.  Other than that it's been very stable.

Anyway, fully connected with phone number switch from Vodafone (which was surprisingly painless) and getting around 105/23 connection for the BB.  Speed Test may have to change their "speedometer" graphic as people can get 200+.

Thanks all for your help
