I'm not looking to rule the world or anything, but for those that are using the Fritz 7490 what should I be looking at doing to get the best.  I'm on unlimited fibre with home phone plus (yes the wife insisted).

Here are a couple of questions/thoughts to get started.

Phone line:  I'm using my existing Uniden TAM base station with three additional DECT cordless phones connected to the TAM.  Am I better to ditch the Uniden answering machine/base and register all 4 handsets with the FritzBox directly?  If so, what are the benefits?

Should the 2.4 and 5GHz bands use the same SSID? I've changed them both to my personal choice but kept them the same name.  Any benefit either way?

If I want to use guest access, should I connect a LAN cable from LAN4 on the Fritz directly to a spare LAN port on the ONT?  We have teenagers and friends often come over for "study" (which apparently requires YouTube and Spotify - go figure).

What have you done?  Obviously nothing that would break the FUG or T&C of 2Degrees.

Thanks

You can try but it's unlikely to work well, phones may connect ok but features like caller ID likely to be broken, DECT is something of a joke as a 'standard' and only the Fritz phones will give you reliable functionality.

I find that using the same SSID enables faster client switching between bands as they're moved around, e.g. mobiles around the house, but this depends more on the client's software I think.

Uniden "DECT" is usually their proprietary version of DECT (XDECT, DECT 6.0, ...) and is unlikely to be able to work with anything that uses the real DECT standard.

Thanks for the replies on the DECT and SSID guys.  The phone is working fine and it's good to see caller ID finally.

DECT is just fine as a standard - plenty of GAP compatible handsets can register to different base units and work just fine. Uniden are the ones that bastardized it to suit their phones.

I got no caller id on my GAP capable cordless phones on the fritz. They were horrid panasonics so no loss to bin them.

My budget Panasonic KX-TGA131AZ's work fine with the Fritz and with caller ID.  These are pretty old, I bought them as a three pack and used to have the base station plugged into the Fritz and cycle the phones to charge, but then linked em up directly to the fritz and what do I know, all working well.

Bonus is that even though we've only got 1 VoIP line (with 2Talk), there have been instances that 2 calls have come through and we've been able to talk at the same time!? Not sure what's going on there. And was a tad alarming the first time being on the 'landline' when the other handset starts ringing.

Thanks, I may try it with one of the handsets to see what it's like. I can always switch it back if needed.

Out of interest, what's the alternative phone if not DECT?  Is the FritzFon WiFi?

I don't know what you're trying to achieve with this, but no. If you want a separate wireless network for guests then you have to create it on the Fritz (if it does that) or get another access point on another channel.

You can create a VPN quite easily if you ever wanted to access the devices in your home network remotely. I tried recently and it works great.

I have a dedicated Aussie VOIP number running in my Fritz box so my Aussie in-laws & I get local calling rates to each other (10c per call unlimited time). To make it easy to the wife I set up a separate phone plugged into the 2nd line port in the Fritzbox. We now have our own Hot Line in case of war :)

Also I use CSIPSimple on my android phone so I can use that as a handset round the house while in Wifi range (Haven't set it up for 3G but looks easy enough if you cared)

Finally I have been meaning to set up voicemail to email and stop using the 2D voice mail as it notification of messages waiting is poor

It appears my Uniden handsets can only be registered on a Uniden Base station!!!  Something about them not being GAP if I read it correctly.

Yeah, as mentioned in this thread, Uniden did some 'interesting' things to the DECT standard for their phones and it's well documented in this forum that they don't work (sorry, should've mentioned this earlier!!).

You could also get the Fritz fone app on your phone, here's the android one.  Which i guess sets up a SIP client to your fritzbox?

Correct, as I said, the "DECT" used by Uniden is only a proprietary protocol loosely based on the real DECT standard.  They do not do DECT GAP.  As far as I know, they do not do DECT - just some modified version of it.  Personally, I believe that they should not be able to advertise that they are DECT phones at all as they do not conform to the DECT standard and will not talk to anything that does use the DECT standard.  I am sure that this false advertising has caused many problems to consumers who have read the "DECT" on the box and thought that their Uniden phone could then connect to other DECT phones.

Thanks, installed it this afternoon and it works well - saves hunting around for the cordless when my phone is next to me.  Not too worried about the DECT/Uniden problem - they work well enough.
