About 24 hours ago my broadband (VDSL) suddenly died. I've logged a ticket with the helpdesk but apart from getting me to perform a hard reset on the modem there's not much they can do (have referred to level 2 support whom I'm guessing don't work weekends).

DSL light is flashing on modem (White Orcon modem), no internet light.

No obvious physical damage to wiring at house or street end.

Checked with neighbours  and none of them are having any connectivity issues.

So my likely culprits are:

- something's gone wrong at Chorus end (is there any way to check on this as an end user, or is this restricted to ISPs?)

- something's gone wrong at Orcon

- something's broken in the modem (unlikely I'd say, it's still working fine as a LAN router)

- something's broken in our interior/exterior wiring that's not obvious

I should add that I've only been on VDSL for a couple of months - so there's a new master splitter, new jackpoint, and new modem involved.

Any other ideas? Or anything i can do to troubleshoot?

Cheers,

Jeremy

Unless you can borrow a modem from someone nearby, probably not much else you can try.

The problem is somewhere between your modem and the DSLAM (both inclusive). Most likely is the wire is broken somewhere and you'll need a Chorus tech to fix if this is the case.

Rain in choruses network. A waterlogged join here took one of my connections off totally, crippled the other and also gave a neighbour issues with theirs. Was under a footpath so a few days to fix it.

Copper is dead end so they will not want to do any maintanance on it, but when it totally dies they kinda have to.

Chorus tech due here in about an hour, so we'll see.

(If it was water damage I'd have expected that to take out the neighbours too - as our lines are strung off the same pole).

Cheers,

Jeremy

Was wiring (just outside the house) which had deteriorated with age. All better now :-)
