Signed up to MyRepublic this week before reading other users posts and now regret it. The Modem arrived today and I was hoping that I was get much better speeds than on ADSL.... Boy was I wrong

 

 

 

ADSL

 

12.92mbps Down
0.96mbps Up
Ping to 8.8.8.8  Avg 49ms
Ping to work Avg 18ms

 

 

 


VDSL
13.43mbps Down
0.93mbps Up
Ping to 8.8.8.8 Avg 97ms
Ping to work Avg 66ms

 

 

 

 

 

So overall not impressed, called tech support and apparently line speeds tests done by the tech the day before were much higher so they are logging a fault and will request the port is reset which they said will take 24-48 hours otherwise it could be a loose jumper cable.

 

 

 

The install was doing during the day and not during peak times so will be interesting to see if that makes a difference, if it does I will be requesting they cancel my connection but will see what happens.

 

 

 

I am hoping for a good outcome but going off some of the feedback I'm not keeping my hopes up.

Have you got a master filter? If not, then your house wiring would be the first place to start looking.

 

Can you post the xDSL line stats from the modem?

Your problem MAY have nothing to do with My Republic.

 

What was your downstream attenuation when you were on ADSL? 

 

If this was high, you can't beat the Laws of Physics - high llne line length &/or bad house wiring will kill VDSL.

 

Do you have a master filter?

Definitely post the DSL stats.

 

 

 

based off your stats you put up i would put your connection in the borderline for vdsl bucket. However that is already assuming your line is preforming the best it possibly could.

Based on your ADSL2+ stats and assuming you had good wiring and the sync rate of this wasn't impacted by this it looks like your VDSL2 connection is working exactly as it should. Assuming you have a master filter installed you should not expect faster speeds than this.

 

VDSL2 reaches a point very quickly where performance is only the same as ADSL2+. The advantage you do get is PTM vs ATM which does mean things are snappier.

 

Differences in latency can be put down to two things - if you have interleaving disabled on ADSL2+ pings will be lower than a normal VDSL2 connection. If your line is clean DLM will drop INP down, myu pick would be you're on 16ms right now.

 

Based on many posts on here it seems MR only have a POP in Auckland and no peering outside Auckland, so assuming you're South of Auckland and your office is with a provider with local peering all traffic has to go to Auckland and back rather than staying local. The extra latency is unlikely to have any real world impact on performance.

I will post DSL stats tonight, I am based in CHCH and don't have access to UFB.

 

 

 

The VDSL connection is certainly not "snappier" the connection refuses to work with 2D DNS servers and only seems to work with Google DNS. Using Myrepuclic's DNS settings don't work either.

 

 

 

At this stage my thoughts are to stick with my current provider until UFB is available  which is supposed to be towards the end of the year sometime.

It wouldn't expect it to with 2D's DNS servers (or any other ISP's DNS servers for that matter). No ISP these days is crazy enough to allow lookups from outside their network.

Using another provider's DNS servers is something that hasn't worked for some time.  Google DNS is deliberately made public, most ISPs' DNS resolvers are deliberately firewalled off to avoid people using them as DDoS amplifiers.

Changing to MyRepublic's advertised DNS servers didn't work either but when changing the DNS to the router it works fine.

 

I have the next week off so will be doing testing  the speed both in peak and non peak  times.

 

 

 

If only speeds barely higher than ADSL are achievable then why do people bother with VDSL?

Your VDSL and ADSL speeds are only barely comparable, because of the distance of your line itself.

 

As explained though, PTM compared to ATM is bit of a boost. Personally i would love to see Adsl over PTM offered on chorus connections as a good midway, Although there is very reasonable arguable points behind why ATM is good for longer and dodgy lines.

 

 

 

On a closer line, you may see 100/50 rather than the 20/1 adsl will do.

Because IF you have a short line length AND good house wiring, VDSL is much faster, both upstream and downstream.

Probably also worth mentioning, Personally i am on a borderline VDSL capable connection (where the length of the driveway goes from a perfectly acceptable connection to not being valid) and currently redeploying the ETP along with a large overhaul of Wifi points to cover both the property and move to VDSL - All this on the assumption it will be worth it, Costly mistake if my very detailed investigations go haywire.

 

 

 

So bothering with it, is a Is it worth it to you situation.

 

The only unfortunate thing about VDSL IMO, is that you loose the capability to play with the interleaving value, Leaving it all up to DLM.

I understood the encapsulation at the modem level to still be ATM though? News to me if not.

 

 

 

I am currently using PPPoE over VLAN10 0/110 on my connection. My isp also allows DHCP without PPPoE but that is rather unreliable in my experience (often when under-load the routing on the downstream will just stop till a new IP is negotiated after some delay)

 

Allows and offers are obviously two very different things unfortunately.
