The CEO of 2degrees, Stewart Sherriff has published a full page spread in today's Dominion Post saying that, if you're a Spark or Vodafone customer unhappy about the disappearance of your monthly (unused) mobile data, we invite you to switch to a 2degrees Pay Monthly plan and keep your unused data each month, for up to a year.

I have a Vodafone monthly mobile data plan and the unused minutes and mobile data are accumulated for up to a year. And Spark's "Skinny" company does the same.

So, is 2degrees unaware of these plans offered by Vodafone and Skinny?

Stewart's letter is a bit emotive when it says:

"Every month you buy data for your mobile. And you probably use a fair amount of it. But what happens to your remaining data? Those little megabytes and the occasional gigabyte that you didn't use?"

"You'd think, given you bought and paid for it, that it all belongs to you. That  it's your to keep. But clearly not all mobile providers agree. Because every month, all over the country, unused data is disappearing from Kiwi's monthly plans."

"Imagine if supermarkets did the same thing. You buy your weekly groceries and stock your fridge. Then, if you haven't finished all the food that week, they come around to yours and take back whatever's left."

"What if the petrol in your car was siphoned out if you hadn't used it all up in a week?"

But don't you think that carry-over data shouldn't have a 12-month limit either if we are to take Sherriff's comments seriously?

Fred

Good question. I am actually losing out on bandwidth every month on my 2degrees pay monthly subscription because I have bandwidth that wasn't used last year.

Interesting that...

"You'd think, given you bought and paid for it, that it all belongs to you. That it's your to keep. But clearly 2degrees don't agree."

apparently in 2Degrees world food doesn't have an expiry date.

It's obviously a big scam by Fonterra to get me to buy more milk. Putting in this 'fake' expiry date so I have to throw my milk away instead of keeping it for months at a time.

Purchasing data for your mobile is not the same as purchasing groceries, fuel, etc. Mobile data when purchased gives you the right to use the cellular network. If you don’t use this right within the agreed time period, you lose it. There is no physical substance that you may use at your own pace. Most software licences and digital media files are similar in that you purchase a right to use only.

Except 2degrees seem to argue that you have bought and paid for it, from what I can understand?

So its bough and paid for. But not really?

I thought this advertising approach is 2 or 3 years late.

My thoughts - Only one is serious in case you miss it :)

1)  This is advertising - if a customer doesn't have roll-over, they may not be aware some other plans from there telco offer roll-over and will switch

2)  I have an unlimited plan - The need to offer me rollover - I want 2 unlimited next month so I don't run out if I go on holiday

Looks to be a good plan, CB!!

I must admit when I read the ad my thought was they don't steal the data monthly they just steal it annually!

Actually there are a lot of foods that didn't need an expiry date (including some dairy products), but the law was changed in the early 2000's to force this

2Degrees - I have 80GB per month on my home broadband.  But at the end of every month, you steal away the balance.

Why, 2Degrees?

the only issue i have with this is that it would be nice to be able to use data on 2degrees (using an iphone 6s from 2degrees).

I signed up last year and had no end of problems in albany, when I talked to them they told me to try "setting it to 3g" and still had issues (very slow, pages timing out etc).  They then told me albany was an issue and it "got busy".

By time I left i had over 4gigs of data that "rolled over" and the only reason why it was that much is because i could not use it.

Signed back up with spark again after that, no issue with data speed etc in albany now.

I'm pretty sure that the letter is about the current offerings from Vodafone and Spark.

If you go to vodafone.co.nz and look at the on account plans there doesn't appear to be any carry over or roll over of data.

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-plans/sim-only/

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-plans/other-on-account-plans/

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/red-plus/

Likewise for Spark, when I looked a week ago.

And Skinny is not the same as Spark: different websites, different ads, different plans. If the letter meant Skinny then it would be expected to say so.

I suspect that the letter is in part a response to Vodafone's recent promotion that dropped the price of additional users down to $20 instead of the current $30 on its "Share your data" plans. At that price, Vodafone's plans became price competitive with those from 2Degrees. Even better with Vodafone's better data coverage and support.

Edit: There are only three brands offering the shared data plans: Vodafone, Spark and 2Degrees. So that's why Skinny is not mentioned.

What Vodafone plan offers rollover data? I wouldn't mind being on that one.
