Before last xmas I was made aware that ultrafast broadband was finally gonna be available on our street.

After last xmas, I got numerous leaflets in my mailbox trying to get us switched to Ultrafast broadband.  In the meantime my current ISP - 2degrees increased the monthly fee for ADSL2 connection, which I'm using.

Before this Easter I rang 2degrees and applied to upgrade my ADSL2 to Ultrafast Broadband 100M

After this Easter some technician from Vision and Stream (subcontractor of Chorus) came to my place without me knowing in advance of their visit.  I was at work that day and they left a card to call.

The last visit from Chorus was end May, when one technician came, again without me being present on site (I have requested specifically and repeatedly that I be given 30 minutes before the technician's arrival so I could make myself present on time when they arrive).  The technician only rang me when he arrived on site and told me he would need to have approval for access to the power pole outside my house.

And now it's almost September, I am still stuck at the Build stage and understand that access to a power pole needs to be obtained before someone could do the "Build".  In fact this power pole access issue was raised as early as back April.

I rang Chorus earlier this month and was only told that a request to gain access to the power pole was just lodged and they were expecting to get reply by the end of Sept!!!

I have no committed contract with 2degrees at the moment.

I have one question: if I decide to change my ISP from 2degrees to another, and apply to have ultrafast broadband installed at my place, do I need to go through all this process again from scratch?

Yes. Every ISP uses the same contractors anyway so there's no point in changing.

You aren't located in Wellington by chance are you, I only just yesterday read a new article saying Chorus was only just working out an access agreement with Wellington's line company and that there are many people in Wellington in the same situation as you.

If your not in wellington it may just pay to keep calling your ISP and bug them about it.

Took them 8 months or so to get permission to use the power pole outside my house, around a year ago. No point changing, nothing 2D can do about the installers, and in my experience they're a good ISP in terms of service and performance.

Hi Zhuyan,

Sorry to hear about your situation there, unfortunately when UFB goes a bit off track it can get messy, as you've experienced here. Would hate to see you jump ship, especially when as others have pointed out it is something that is independent of provider and could happen to provider. There's usually a good reason for this kind of problem.

We're more than happy to check this out for you and see what's happening with your order and escalate if required, can you please message us your broadband customer number and we'll take a look on Monday for you.

Thanks,

Ralph ^JOB

Yes I'm in Wellington so it does look like I'm not alone in this situation.  Thanks for letting know.

I've been with SNAP/2D for over 3-4 years now and am actually quite happy with it, if not for the current held-up for the fibre installation.  I am now aware of the fact that this is beyond ISP control so am quite happy to stay with 2D.

Update on progress as at 03/10/2016

Well there has been no progress still.  When I contacted 2degrees early Aug I was told a request was just submitted (and the previous visit was in June) to obtain approval for power pole access and they expected to come out do the Build by end of Sept.

It's now October; apart from the msg I received from Ralph after my initial post here, I haven't been contacted by anyone either from 2degrees or Chorus

I applied for the fibre broadband this Feb and am still stuck with no progress at all.  Well the only consolation might be the fact that many others are in the similar scenario?

I still have my fingers crossed to see whether I am able to get the fibre by this Xmas...

Update on progress as at 21/10/2016: ZIP

Well now it's a month later than what the estimate Build is to take place, as I was informed back in August.

No follow-up whatsoever from either 2degrees or Chorus

Today I saw this:

Might be worth calling Vodafone again erh?

Call 2degrees and request they obtain a status report from Chorus for you.

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but so-called "gigabit FibreX" (referred to here) is VF-speak for HFC cable - not "real" fibre UFB.

"Vodafone will install customers with an existing cable connection in three days."

Vodafone are NOT promising to install fibre UFB within 3 days. (Wouldn't that be nice?)  undecided
