I've seen a forum topic from over 3 years ago, about missing and delayed texts on 2 degrees, which prompted an otherwise happy 2degrees user to switch networks. I haven't seen any topic this year, though.

For me and my wife, both on 2degrees, we've found delayed text messages quite annoying over the last few months, at least. Sometimes it also takes a very long time to have the texts sent but the main problem is delayed arrival - they sometimes turn up hours later but often take many, many minutes to arrive. I realise that texts are not guaranteed but have never had as much trouble as I'm having now (and I've used text messaging for decades).

Has anyone else noticed this? I'm not sure if it's just a 2degrees problem or a local problem (I'm in Waiuku, Franklin) or more general. Thoughts?

From which network(s)? At what times? Filed a report with 2degrees?

As somebody who sends hundreds of texts via Sparks etext platform per week I can confirm that 2degrees sometimes takes FOREVER. Spark / Vodafone average 30secs (going via email to Sparks service then to the phone in question) whilst 2degrees can sometimes take 20mins for the text to come through. This has been ongoing for months but some days can be fine.

I normally ask the person when I send the text "are you on 2degrees?" if they say yes it is normally onto another method of what I am doing.

Thanks, michaelmurfy, that seems to confirm the impression that 2degrees is perhaps the problem.

UHD, all the texts we (my wife and I) send are from 2 degrees. Many go to 2degrees phones but I haven't done extensive data collection on that. Certainly, 2degrees to 2degrees seems very variable and often well delayed - occasionally completely missing.

I've also seen significant delays with text message to or from me (I'm on 2 degrees) at times. Most of the time it is fine, but then at various times over a several day period I will experience these delays. I had hoped it wasn't 2degress, but obviously it is. Damn annoying!!

Hi, text delays can happen for a number of reasons and are not isolated to one network. Here's some common reasons - Text issues.

If you haven't already contacted us on this please PM us 3-4 examples including the following info so our Tech Support can look into this -

  • Your number and 2degrees 4 digit security PIN
  • The sending number (A) and the receiving number (B)
  • Time & date the A number sent the text
  • Time & date the B number received the text
  • Your phone make/model
  • Your location at the time
  • How many signal strength bars and what signal you had on the phone at the time, i.e. R3G (roaming 3G), E, 4G, 3G, H etc
  • An alternative contact number.

Thanks

Over the last few weeks text messages I send to my partner are consistently delayed.

Last night I sent her one and it took over a half an hour to get to her.

We are both 2Degrees customers and we were both in Christchurch.

I looked on the 2Degrees site for trouble shooting for delayed texts but none of the solutions fitted.

It seems to me 2Degrees want to put the onus on the user but I would suggest there is a problem in 2Degrees system that needs sorting out but they want to bury their heads in the sand and not recognise the problem.

Yeah, I continue to have problems. One was a text from Auckland civil defence about the Tsunami warning. Luckily, it was the cancellation of the warning but what if it had been more serious? Today, I had a text arrive quickly at it's destination but another, to the same number, hadn't arrived hours later.

I've sent some examples in a PM as per the message above but it seems like they want an awful lot of info when they must know there is an issue. I'm seriously thinking about switching to another provider.

you're having a laugh aren't you 2Degrees?

When I text I just expect the text to go through.

This is what I and by the look of it, many others are paying you $50/month for but are not getting.

I usually don't have time to check how many signal strength bars there are or if I am on 3G, 4G or if the wind is blowing in the same direction as the text is.

Not really, missing or delayed texts aren't a joke. We appreciate it's a lot to ask for and don't expect customers to have all of the above details, but having as much info as possible helps us isolate the issue and figure out why it's failing.

Texts can fail or be delayed for a number of reasons, not always due to issues on our network.

Cheers

It is happening to me too. Upper Riccarton / Christchurch. Other person in Riccarton / Christchurch. Both on Prepay.

Txt sent to me (2D) at 5.20pm from another 2D phone arrived at 5.45pm today.

Over an hour yesterday!

Very frustrating when someone physically arrives before the txt telling you they are coming!

If you haven't already reported it can you PM us the details on this please? Including your #, phone make/model, the senders #, location and date & time so we can investigate.

Thanks

I couldn't guess the frequency off the top of my head but it happens to me too, Christchurch 2D to 2D. Sometimes I forget it's a thing, but it's been happening on and off for about two years.

Often if I send an sms that doesn't arrive, when I send another sms they'll arrive together. Sometimes if I think I should have received an sms and haven't then I'll send one to myself, and that can cause other sms's to come through. The other day I received an sms at the correct time, and then received it again with the same timestamp ten minutes later.

If it's really important I'll ring when I don't get a reply, would be nice if sms worked better but I've gotten used to it.

I might have a hunt around for some details to PM later. More likely if I get bored over the weekend I'll try and work with tasker to record signal strength etc with incoming/outgoing sms and then wait for fresh examples - that will probably be more useful anyway. [edit: I won't really be able to get remote details though.]

I experienced some delayed SMS msgs between 2 2D phones recently (2 weeks ago ?) , some took about 4 hours to arrive. Thankfully nothing important but was still puzzling at the time. Seemed to come right again as next day messages were prompt again.
