Moved address recently to a new part of auckland. After getting things setup (needed extra config in the router after i reset it apparently, 15 minutes with a helpful tech on the phone) He finished up telling me that my phone was on POTS, not VOIP as it was previously. Is there any reason it would be done that way?

Possibly unrelated - but i'm also paying about $9 more than my previous address now as well, and getting less for it. i.e. POTS instead of VOIP and no caller id/voicemail.

As I understand it you are provisioned POTS when you are connected to their unbundled gear at the exchange.

No caller ID/voicemail is more likely to be related to the plan you are on. It used to be included as standard but not anymore on their new/current plans. So it depends whether or not you agreed to change to one of their new plans/pricing..

The service description of their most current plan/offering is here: https://www.orcon.net.nz/myaccount-support/pdfs/ADSL.pdf

It seems they have four ways of provisioning:

  • Broadband and VoIP Phone Line (Orcon exchange equipment)
  • Broadband and Analogue Phone Line (Orcon exchange equipment)
  • Broadband and VoIP Phone Line (Chorus exchange equipment)
  • Broadband and Analogue Phone Line (Chorus exchange equipment)

Thats an interesting read - Seems like I'm on an At home plan on Chorus equipment. and previous address was a Genius Plan on Orcon equipment. Based on that doc, i should be able to get genius on chorus, and get the voip phone.

Just wondering out lout now if it is worth the switch.

What I note from that is that CallerID and Call Waiting is only specifically priced on the Broadband and Analogue Phone Line (Chorus exchange equipment)

That implies to me that it is included on the other plans.

Hmmmm

Since I'm assuming you're in urban Auckland you'll most likely be on "At Home/Orcon equipment". Initially they did VoIP over their own equipment but later changed to POTS for some reason.

As listed, their most current pricing plan for on-net customers does not include voicemail/caller ID as standard. It is listed as "Voicemail package for an extra $4" and I assume that includes both voicemail and caller ID.

The last option "At Home/Chorus equipment" will primarily be for those in regions where they do not have Genius voice interconnects and cannot be served by Chorus EUBA (Genius over Chorus equipment). That will be an 'off-net' service using resold HomeLine and the wholesale smartphone charges apply as listed (where available).

I think on on chorus equipment in Urban south auckland based on the online upgrade service trying to charge $10 for voicemail - which aligns to that document for "At Home" over Chorus

Okay, not sure then, hopefully the Orcon rep can sort it out for you. :)
