I recently bought a 4G router for someone to use out in the sticks. The copper is so flaky it's barely usable which is to be expected as the building is miles from the exchange and the last building on the road. 2D however have 4G working and so we thought we'd give it a crack.

We initially bought the 1GB pack for $20 to see how the router went. Usage was a couple of hundred MB a week which was expected (and not going to be any higher) and as we're really happy with it's performance we purchased a 12GB pack for $99.

That was on 16 September but now the website states we have only 8GB left. I check the usage meter and it has us at 294MB in that time. Infact for the last month it's only been 734MB.

I've emailed 2D through the website but had no reply.

Anyone have any idea which usage meter is correct ?

Which usage meter is that? The website - I assume you mean the self-care portal - checks the charging system balances in real-time. So whatever it says is how much is actually left.

Sorry, yes the website. The front page "Your 2degrees" says I have 8064MB of Mobile Zone Data remaining whilst the "Your Usage" page shows we've used 295MB in a week.

295MB does not equal 4GB missing from the 12GB we purchased a week ago.

Ah, I see. OK: the balance page - 'Your 2degrees' - does a real-time check in the charging system to see how much is actually available. The 'Your Usage' page shows what has been used up according to the CDRs. However, CDRs are only generated at the end of a chargeable activity. In the case of data, this means when you last ended the data session. In your case, in a router, the data sessions are indefinitely long - hours, days, possibly weeks. So the usage page is pretty pointless for you. Go by what is in Your 2degrees for remaining balance.

Hmmmm, they do nothing more than work from a single website which they enter a few text fields and retrieve a report. Nothing major and certainly not something they would use 4GB in week. Before we bought the 12GB pack they spent two weeks doing exactly the same processing and still had half the 1GB pack we had bought remaining.

Thanks Salty.

I would check device updates settings (PC, mobiles, tablets) which are connected to router, this could be triggered monthly and thus you have not seen anything last 2 weeks, but this week something triggered updates and voila few GBs gone

Hi @martyyn

If you want us to follow up on this please PM us the number on the SIM in the router.

Cheers

If you can get a daily (or even hourly) usage that would also help track things down...

^^^^ This!

I was in a situation a couple of weeks ago where I had to use a 3G/4G mobile hotspot to run the network for a few days. Bought a 2GB block thinking that would be enough for restricted use for the time I needed it.... 20 mins after buying it it was gone!!  F$%king Windows 10 decided to download the Anniversary update that day and burned through it in minutes :-(

Check any Windows 10 PCs have that network connection set as 'metered' to stop that happening...

It's not stopping it in all cases from what I've heard.

How on earth did I not think about that ?!

@2degreesCare sorted me out showing there was an outstanding session which had yet to appear in the usage stats.
