G'Day Everyone,

I am currently with Bigpipe and they are really good!

However, we are moving from Wellington to Tauranga and Bigpipe do not have fibre available (boo hoo!)

So need to find another provider and Orcon is one of the options (along with 2degrees and Spark).

We are not gamers but do a fair bit of internet surfing, downloading and music streaming.

Is Orcon a good option or not?

In my experience, Orcon would be near the bottom of my list.

Spark would be your best bet for Fibre. They're on-par with BigPipe (since BigPipe is a sister company) and do have online support via their chat. Otherwise Voyager are good too.

Performance of Orcon is fantastic, however the first line support is what really lets Orcon down from being an amazing ISP in my experience...

I've never, ever, in the last 7 years had any international performance issues with them during peak hours either...

Besides Bigpipe, from what i've seen in the other ISP sub forums here on geekzone.. the Orcon techs appear to be the next most active and are bloody stars when it comes to helping.

I hear nothing but good things about Voyager as well, hope it all goes well for you!

Back in August, according to TrueNet, Orcon's fibre Sydney speeds were dropping to 50% by 9pm. (see chart 10)
However the latest TrueNet stats show that this has now been sorted.

2. Service matters.

Orcon customer here, for what it's worth.

Happy with the speed (I'm on 100/20 UFB), not noticed any issues in the evening with streaming or standard access.

However, I will cheerfully admit that sometimes (ok, most of the time!) their support leaves a lot to be desired.

But ennui and inertia conspire against me doing anything about it. At the end of the day, the Internet works 99% of the time, and that's close enough.

Since Bigpipe don't offer UFB in the area you're moving to, I'd personally go with 2degrees of all of the options you've listed. IPv6 by default, good peering, good peak time performance.

Another orcon fibre customer here. Although I had some issues initially after joining orcon, they've been flawless for probably at least a year now. I've never noticed any drop in performance be it international downloads or gaming.
