Hey all,

So we have been with orcon for a month now. We switched from slingshot and we are having trouble changing our IP address.

We are trying to obtain a new IP address because we have our website on a virtual private network server with hostgator. At the time we switched over to orcon we were accessing the server from our slingshot ip address, when the switch happend and we got connected to orcon our ip address changed to a new one, and the server flagged it and blocked it. Contacted hostgator about this and they stated all we needed to do was change the IP address.

Short story

- We have a dynamic ip address (confirmed from orcon)

- We are on unlimited VDSL plan with phone line and we have the VDSL modem from orcon

- We have tried alot of things to reset the ip address (leaving the modem off for 2 days , resetting the modem, turning the modem off and on, using the ipconfig /release /renew /dnsflush , orcon did some things from there end as well)

- We had a static ip address with previous isp which was cancelled prior to switching. We were reverted back to a dynamic IP address where We could just turn our modem on and off to change the ip address

We received a phone call today from orcon stating theres nothing they can do about the fault, so i thought before i resort to thinking of switching to another ISP (because i probably will need to) if anyone on here has any advice or tips to help us. Thanks in advance

Surely it's hostgator that needs to whitelist not you changing IP

Yup, sounds like its Hostgator limiting your account to your previous static IP. Tell them youre now on a dynamic IP system.

Your post confuses me... you say you HAD a static IP, but it would change whenever you reset your router - that is NOT a static IP.

Tell the host to white list your IP

Hostgator need to whitelist your new IP address... they are "sticky" so it would only change if for some reason the address pool became exhausted (which ideally should never happen)

Just re-read that also, my mistake. Its meant to say that we had cancelled the static ip address and we were reverted back to a dynamic ip where we were able to switch the modem on and off to change the ip address before switching to orcon.

We had spoken to hostgator in relation to the static ip we had but i just remembered that 2 or 3 weeks prior to switching to orcon we were on a dynamic ip (around the times of the kaikoura earthquakes) we were on a dynamic ip as we had to change our ip address when the earthquakes happend in wellington, and we did this by just switching the modem off for a minute or two and it changed the ip automatically.

Not clear on why you need to change your IP all the time.  I haven't changed my IP in several years, and I can't think of any good reason why you would want to do so on a regular basis?

You need to establish why hostgator are blacklisting - changing IP address and/or ISP is not the solution.

Not an issue with changing the IP we are happy to have a static IP again but orcon have tryed to assign us one but for some reason they cant change our IP which is the actual issue, which is why we want to change the IP address in the first place and actually try to resolve the issue all together as, orcon can also not assign us a new ip either way dynamically or static.

Also a note to the others about hostgator, its in there policy that if an ip address is flagged or blocked that they are not required to unflag or unblock the ip address its up to the account owner to sort the issue out.

It also has this in their support pages:
http://support.hostgator.com/articles/cpanel/how-do-i-deny-ip-address-access

It tells you how to block an iP address.....and how to unblock an iP address.
It looks like a self-service action.

If that's their policy they are incompetent and you should shift your business elsewhere. Quickly.

I had this problem when using a cheap host for a clients website, and it was so frustrating. The only option was to move.

Agreed.  This is a braindead policy.  However, the fact your IP keeps getting blocked indicates that perhaps some device on your network is doing things you're not aware of.  You should probably perform a security audit (or have someone do so).

Alas I tried to get the Dynamic purged for you however our NOC Engineer advised he couldn't clear the lease-state and PPP Session.
I did manage to assign you a temporary static hoping that when I released it, you would get a new IP but unfortunately the old one reassigned.
He did advise to refer you back to your webhost and hopefully that was relayed to you from the Helpdesk.
