Hi,

from past 2 days, i have been experiencing slow internet.

i am on adsl connection, speed test shows 5 mpbs down / 800 kbps up. on orcon.

i was able to watch youtube videos at 1080p without buffer. but from past 2 days, the speed test shows 4 mb down / 70 kb up. Also similar results with lan cable

I tried turning off & restarting the router but no improvement.

I am the only one using the wifi & is connected to only 2 devices (laptop & phone)

Any suggestions ??!!?

Sounds like a line fault, You are best to give the helpdesk a call so they can diagnose and roll a tech if required.

Has it been raining where you are ? If so, could be a break in the line somewhere and water is getting into the line, which causes all sorts of dropout fun :)

Yeah, awesome fun. And the chorus techs conveniently cant make it till the weather has been good for a few days and it has had a chance to dry out.

Yes it been raining here.

Also another question, i have an exchange cabinet closer than 900 m from my house, but orcon does not get wiring from that one. why ?

Are cabinets different for all providers ?

Will depend on where your copper from your house runs. Just because the cabinet is close, doesn't mean your copper connects there.

Ahh.. that made it clear.

Every few days a orcon person calls me and says that why are you on "adsl" still while you have "vdsl" available at your address.

all website show vdsl at my address but i cannot get the desired speed due to distance from cabinet....

I'd be saying to the rep "put up or shut up" :)

If youre on the extreme edge of the VDSL run, then its generally not worth the change anyway.

If they are saying that you can get VDSL then perhaps you are on that cabinet and you just have a bad line or bad internal wiring. Have you actually tried ordering VDSL at all?

I did.

as soon as they said i can better speed , i switched to vdsl, then when i did not receive more than 5mbps even after 1 month of getting vdsl, i called them and log a complain.

They then sent a technician to check. the technician called me and said that due to the cabinet location further away than 1 km. i cannot get more than this speed.

Thus had to cancel the new contract and went back to old connection.

I thought that my house must be having copper wire from nearest cabinet, which is not the case.

Also got the wiring checked before 2 years when i moved in.

I would do Isolation test: The help desk will ask you to do this so best do it before you call in that way you can request action as fast as possible.

1.) First remove all phone devices from the line and only connect the router and a PC via Ethernet.

2.) Test speeds and Check line rates on the modem.

3.) If things don't get better its most likely an issue with the internal wiring or outside your premise, most of the time its a dry join or something like that increasing resistance on the line.

4.) if things DO get better plug things in one at a time until you see the problem occur.
