Hi

I don't know if anyone else has this problem but there seems to be an issue with my modem?

- Once a week or two or every few days my modem would lose connectivity.

- When I remote into the Modem configuration i can i'm connected to it as I can see the line speed and Ip address.

- I would need to restart the modem to get the internet going again.

- This is thru lan or wifi.

- The modem would look normal but there's no internet traffic.

- Windows would say that I have no internet connection.

- Orcon ran a line test for 1 day but the modem seems to lose connection early morning after a few days to a week.

- It's at random times but a reboot always fixes it.

What can I do to know if its a modem issue?

Is it possible for you to try a different modem?

I have found that modems/routers can only last 2 or 3 years sometimes.

They seem quite averse to putting good ventilation slots in them and some can run very hot - which is never a good thing for electronic items.

How old is your router?

Could be worth checking for firmware upgrades - sometimes silly bugs get fixed.

Doing a factory reset and setting it up again might be worth a go.

it's about two years old . Firmware was never upgraded.

I can't find any VDSL modems around unless I buy one.

I'll check what version and upgrade it.

Is it the modem Orcon provided?  If so, they will replace it if faulty...

Its a orcon provided modem.

I wonder if they will replace it if my disconnection are between 5-10 days?

I would do a factory reset first.  It should auto-configure the ISP stuff.  Wireless passwords, port forwards you'll just need to set up again (if you had any).  That should also trigger a firmware update.

it was really painful for me to get orcon to replace their router, endless tests.

I was really lucky that Fibre came to my street, so I got a new router by jumping from VDSL to Fibre, otherwise I don't know how long it'd take.

I think it was already week 3 when I was asked for the 3rd time to test my modem by unplugging and wait, and plugging it back in etc.

The worst thing I have always found about this sort of issue, is that its not like the router/modem dies, they just seem to start behaving really flakey.

A hard problem (dead unit) is easy to see - odd behaviour can drive you crazy and waste a lot of time.

I want to upgrade the firmware as factory resetting doesn't work as I've tried it a few months ago.

The original firmware would probably require me in setting it up but I can't seem to find any instructions on how to setup the modem for my VDSL connection.

Where is the setup screen?

http://192.168.20.1/ by default

I would do a factory reset from there (rather than the button method).  That will trigger an automatic update to the latest firmware because these modems are managed by our ACS platform.

Don't put the netcomm firmware, it won't help you.

If it's still playing up after you do that, please PM me with your username and I will get you a replacement sent out.

Any likelihood of the ACS platform updating the FritzBox's minne has an old firmware on it

FRITZ!Box 7490

FRITZ!OS 06.30

latest from AVM.de is FRITZ!OS 6.80

Did you by any chance change the IP Range on the modem, if so you should leave it as Orcon set it (I had the same issue awhile back and that resolved the issue for me).

Spoken to the team which looks after router updates and such, and confirmed we aren't pushing firmware updates for the Fritz!Box at this stage.

There are a lot of changes and new features in 6.80.  With any firmware update on our supplied/supported routers we have to first perform testing, update internal documentation, etc. and of course we give priority to updating firmware where there is a pattern of faults attributed to bugs, etc.  So, while the Fritz!Box firmware upgrade is likely something we will look at doing, I can't give any indication of the expected timeframe.
