I've just got myself upgraded to UFB. I'd like to keep the phone line. My plan was to use my existing Netgear R8000 as the router directly and connect an ATA for phone line, as Slingshot uses VoIP.

Before the chorus guy came I called technical support asking for my SIP password. The technician told me the password is only available after cutover to fibre.

OK. So after the chorus guy finished everything I successfully configured R8000 to connect to internet. Time for another call to Slingshot for the SIP password.

This time I got told that since I did not order a Slingshot modem (NF4v) I cannot have a VoIP line. The VoIP line is bind to the modem and cannot be provisioned on its own. The only way for me to have a phone line and keep my old number is to use GoTalk, and that's an mobile app only thing and cannot be used as SIP.

So before I bite the bullet and decide to go naked, can someone answer the questions below.

  • Is it true that I cannot have phone line without a slingshot modem?
  • Can I configure GoTalk with SIP so I can use it with an ATA?

Thank you very much.

Any good provider will lock down their VoIP to their own managed CPE. The numerous threads on here from people trying to make their VoIP setup with, particularly when Slingshot provided no support at all for iTalk is all the proof you need of this. Giving people SIP settings for what is a end to end managed solution simply creates nightmares.

If you want to use VoIP with your setup your best bet is to move to a 3rd party VoIP provider.

Slingshot do have instructions on how to setup your own ATA with UFB. https://help.slingshot.co.nz/Ultra-Fast-Broadband/68286790/Ultra-Fast-Fibre-SIP-settings-for-home-phone.htm

That means they do allow people to do that as an option.

I just don't want to chain yet another device in front of my router. I have got a wireless bridge with my ATA so I can hide it out of sight.
