No you can't duplicate a SIM card and when you say copy the data what do you mean?
You can copy the names / numbers off a SIM card to the handset
Linux
This is not 1997 you should have your Google account setup and they should be backed up online, What type of handset have you got?
Linux
You won't lose the mobile number as the mobile number is not even on the SIM card, SIM ID's the subscriber onto the mobile network
So if you ever lose the SIM card a SIM swap can be done and you keep the same mobile number,

VF use to have a desk side cloning tool once upon a time before this 'cloud' thing for changing between 32/64/128K sims (I think you can still obtain online and use adaptors for micros)
But yes, astounded the number of 'lost ph txt me' I see on social media this day in age. Even a mate recently had an S3 and swapped to S8 to find most his contacts were on the sim. First thing I disable from contacts view/ability to save to on power on!
Double unsure how iThing users keep losing it when they have full device backups...
Hi Jayjay332211
What Linux says ^^. You can't clone a SIM but we can move your number over to a blank SIM if you lose it. You can only have one MSISDN (mobile number) on a SIM at one time.
Here's more info on SIM cards

Jayjay332211: I have a samsung s8
Your numbers should be backed up to your Google account then. There is no need to store them on the SIM anymore.

log into your Google / Gmail account and click on contacts and you should see all your contacts
Linux
Well and truely.
First show only contacts on SIM, then copy these to device/sync with gmail
1. Open "Contacts" App
2. Hit "Menu Button" (The one left to the Home button)
3. Tap on "Contacts to display"
4. On the opened list, find "SIM" and mark it
5. Now you can see the numbers saved on SIM
Then reverse the process (and leave phone/sim unchecked) and be sure to not save new ones to them in future.

Follow the steps suggested by @Oblivian above.
If you really want to spend money, there are multi format SD card readers available that also do SIM cards. First hit on PB Tech, didn't look any further.
Don't store numbers on the SIM card (limited to one number per name) or the handset (lose handset, lose contacts) but instead save them to the cloud. You can have a Samsung account that syncs your contacts or you can go with saving your contacts to Microsoft, Apple and Google (best for Androids). No more lost contacts when phone handset is lost.
