Hey guys,

I am having a strange issue where some downloads seem to be capped and also certain type of traffic.

Usenet and Torrent download seem to top out at 2MB/s. (These services are both using SSL)

Some http downloads are topping out at 30KB/s.

Some websites very very slow to respond, Runescape site was one I was having trouble with tonight.

Youtube has been buffering like crazy lately.

Skype constantly dropping out and sometimes taking 1-2mins to send a simple text instant message. Video seems OK.

Now heres the kicker, My brother who is also on a 2degrees connection with the same identicle fiber speead - 100/20 is experiencing exactly the same issue.

If I connect a VPN to Australia, Tokyo or various states in the USA I can acheive near full speed instantly (7-12MB/s) as soon s I disconnect the VPN I am throttled back to the hard limit again.

Speedtest gives me a constant 100mbps Down and 19.8mbps Up and 7 ping.

Can anyone explain what is going on here? I have only noticed this for the last week or so, the first couple of days I thought it was just a temporary issue at 2Degrees and it would get resolved...

Are you in the central North Island? (Hamilton, Tauranga etc.)

As a matter of fact yes!, I am in Cambridge (Waikato Region) and my brother is in Hamilton (Waikato Region)

Is there an issue currently I am unaware of?

Some http downloads are topping out at 30KB/s.

Interesting... I had a hell of a time trying to update a Linux VM last night with a bunch of 50MB+ packages coming down at 30KB/sec.
I'm on 2degrees HSNS fibre.

There was an issue over a week ago but according to them it has been fixed as of 24 July.

Seems that was to do with an outage we had.

This appears to be a different issue which obviously people are experiencing but from what I can see it has been reported anywhere official yet.

I've noticed something similar on VDSL from near Christchurch. Only get 30KB/s average (starts out faster) on requests to AWS S3 in us-east-1, example. No issues with Youtube or other sites AFAICT though.

Seems there is an issue. Called 2Degrees and explained the issue but was told there is nothing wrong? and they cannot guarantee the speeds advertised...

2Degrees are you able to chime in on this issue for us to try and resolve?

2MB/sec = 16Mbps. Latency from the USA can limit download speed. On 2 degrees fiber I can get close to line speed on things like Ubuntu torrents.

Hmmm, AWS you say. Hulu has been pretty rubbish for me over the last week or so too. I wonder if it's the same thing. I've been trying to watch Invader Zim again. THIS BANDWIDTH IS TOO LOW FOR ZIIIIIM!

I'm getting 60Mbps up and down to AWS Oregon with the aws command line tools to my own bucket. I expect the tools are using threading to increase performance.

The issue is on my own connection I seem to hit a limit with certain traffic of 2 MB/s and 30KB/s with some http traffic.

Connecting a VPN to any other location then unlocks the full speed of this traffic so may be a traffic shaping issue.

Unusual that it is not just me experiencing the exact same issue.

I has nearly 300days uptime on my connection so decided to reboot my pfsense for good measure. still no change.

Try plugging your computer directly into your router / modem rather than going via firewalls and proxies.

I only have a dumb gigabit switch between my and the router (pfsense) not easily able to take that out of the equation without bringing the whole network down but I know for a fac my brother who is experiencing the same issue is connect directly to his FritzBox.

Seems to be the same here, can't say I've noticed anything other than the odd 30KB/s download.

Same issue here in Hamilton. Speed test states full speed of 100Mbps is achievable (and has been until now).

Most websites load fine, but some are slow and there is definitely some sort of traffic shaping going on, either intentionally, or unintentionally as NNTP traffic for example, which maxed out my connection speed (100/20 fibre) before this happened now shows 2MB/s maximum.

Very bizarre!
