I have just left one isp with major and ongoing bandwidth problems for another it seems. I ran into problems with my new orcon broadband connection straight away, well at least as soon as I tried to use it at peak time, when I found certain internet activity was blocked from been used altogether, this was yesterday, same thing today, downloading of podcasts from websites and using googleearth work as they should up until the evening starts and then they hit a brickwall, it seems obvious to me that orcon are blocking certain traffic in order to partially overcome their underinvestment in bandwidth. What I really can't understand though is why there are not people yelling and screaming about it in a forum such as this, instead there is a misleading silence, I can understand that joe public might be simply fobbed off with some explanation that essentially boils down to it not been orcons responisbility and of course no admission of them not buying enough bandwidth but I would have thought people in here would be onto the truth. I see that the orcon website says there are now no issues, what a joke, what do you call cutting off parts of the internet in order to overcome limited bandwidth on other parts of the internet. Anyhow to say I am annoyed is an understatement, I go from serious bandwidth problems but still having some access to now having no access to the things i want to use the net for, there is no way they should be allowed to charge me at the moment.
When the hell is somebbody going to take isps in general to task, they get away with absolute murder, it's one thing to have the problems they do but then to not disclose them and outright lie to customers is got to be breaking all sorts of laws, the fact is though if they told the truth then customers would want their mmoney bback and they know this, the customers would not stand for what has been going on if theyy only knew. So where the hell is the government in all this, talk about the wild west, at least they had a sheriff. I know for the most part they get away with the lies because of a general public ignorance to anything technical, it doesn't take much knowledge and logic to realise what is happening though, I wish people would stop accepting everything so called experts tell them as been the truth.
As for what to do now, I am at a loss because I know I am going to strike similar issues no matter where I go, that said i won't be staying with orcon when I can't use the internet when I like for what I like, what a bloody hassle this all is though.
I really am starting to wonder how many people can actually see through the isp spin that they give us on these problems.
I have a keyboard repeat key problem so fforgive me for repeating letters.

Paragraphing would make your text much more readable, and reach a wider audience.

74% of our readers have indicated that badly formatted text causes them to simply not read the post, and move on to the next topic.

What is blocked according to you? My parents have Orcon at home and I seem to be able to access everything fine.

(and paragraphing would help)

If you are serious with that question try downloading a podcast from here http://feeds.feedburner.com/astronomycast during the evening, it should not be possible but will be during the day, try this everyday until you are convinced, also try using the program google earth, it will work during the day but not in the evening. The other thing to consider is that neither of these problems existed until I switch from my old isp to orcon.

Oh and if I am somehow wrong with my diagnosis and conclusions then i will be all too pleased to apologise but alas I can see no way that I will have that pleasure.

Well that response only proves to me that you were not serious with your question and only interested in a pissing contest.
So before you go pissing on about my described block I will clarify by saying there is an effective block, whether it is actually technically a block or a severe limiting in bandwidth for these internet activities the result is the same, a block for customers trying to use the internet in these ways.

Look, you said you were experiencing "blocks" on your Orcon internet connection. In my personal experience with Orcon, I have never seen or experienced any "blocks", so I asked in all seriousness when/where you are experiencing those problems. As it may be a router/whatever problem that has nothing to do with Orcon in general.

But if you are going to react like a little baby to people who are trying to help you, you won't get much help here I can guarantee that.

I have been an Orcon customer for about 14 months - they have been fine but when I recently changed plans my download speed dropped by a factor of 10, came back from holiday and things were back to normal.  Ie they are fallable.

There are a few ways to test Internet speed, one is ping.  Ping measures the time for a piece of info to go to its destination and back.  On Windows XP it is available on a command prompt: start, program files, accessories, command prompt.

Type in ping <destination> ie ping feeds.feedburner.com <enter>.

I have just got, 10:30 pm the following:

Pinging feeds.feedburner.com [66.150.96.119] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.150.96.119: bytes=32 time=223ms TTL=242
Reply from 66.150.96.119: bytes=32 time=222ms TTL=242
Reply from 66.150.96.119: bytes=32 time=223ms TTL=242
Reply from 66.150.96.119: bytes=32 time=222ms TTL=242

Ping statistics for 66.150.96.119:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 222ms, Maximum = 223ms, Average = 222ms

This compares with 195ms for www.google.com

Let's try downloading Ep. 88: The Hubble Space Telescope from astronomycast.com.  After loading 35kB, it has frozen.  It looks like the website is causing the problems, let's ping astronomycast.com:

Pinging astronomycast.com [67.228.209.249] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 67.228.209.249: bytes=32 time=192ms TTL=50
Reply from 67.228.209.249: bytes=32 time=191ms TTL=50
Reply from 67.228.209.249: bytes=32 time=189ms TTL=50
Reply from 67.228.209.249: bytes=32 time=194ms TTL=50

Ping statistics for 67.228.209.249:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 189ms, Maximum = 194ms, Average = 191ms

Surprisingly this looks normal.

Let's try my old faithful, download.com: downloading AVG, all 45MB of it:

Seems to be averaging about 40 kilobytes per sec, which is Ok.  Not great, but not awful.

So my conclusion is astronomycast.com is having problems.  Ping didn't notice them, but it's still good for telling you when things aren't going well.

My advice would be to try download.com and post your download speeds here.

Have been with Orcon for a while now with excellent service until just recently when I started to notice some overseas sites were sporadically not reachable.

Tried Google Earth last night and couldnt contact the server, hmmm.

Tried Google Earth this morning, no problem.

Will have to look into this further, i think.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

You might like to take a look here:

There have also been several other recent threads in this forum alluding to Orcon speed problems, some of which include responses from Orcon and a great deal of detail.

I've been with orcon for nearly 2 years  and I've had similar problems with orcon recently. Typically I can't manage to stream youtube any more or any site requiring more 256kbits/sec typically until around midnight. IMHO the problem start around the time they started providing adsl2 connects for their unbundled customers. I'm guessing that maybe they haven't upgraded their capacity when they starting rolling out their shiny new 24mbits connections.
