What's wrong with it?

I'm not sure if the gigabit is classed as part of their Genius service, but you can't use a 3rd party device to replace a Genius device.  https://help.orcon.net.nz/Technical-Support/Phone/Genius-Phone/44742404/I-have-a-VoIP-capable-modem-already-Can-I-use-this-on-Orcon-Genius.htm

Also if you use a 3rd party then Orcon can't remote into the device to diagnose faults.  I can't see any benefit to replacing it with a 3rd party device.

The main benefit for myself after using it for 2 years, roughly, would be to boost the wifi signal. It's not very consistent, most days my ipad receives the signal without issue anywhere in the house but other days barely half my house gets the signal and its a real pain not being able to do anything other then hope the signal improves as you lay in bed moving the ipad around.

^For that you can just get a better WiFi access point.  I have an Airport Extreme connected to my Fritzbox, and I have just disabled the WiFi in the Fritz.  Easy.

The previous white genius router had zero issues with wifi ever, but the fritzbox in my bedroom provides 3 bars at times, some days 2, other days none and it's really annoying but i'll try looking up the airport extreme - thanks for the info :)

Take a look at grabbing a UniFi AC-LR. You won't regret it :)
