Hi,

 

 

 

Just got fully switched over from ADSL to VDSL today and installed an xDSL Master Filter, though after I completed the install, the modem was unable to synchronize. My phones however, all worked fine.

 

 

 

Log displayed:

 

kernel: Line 0: VDSL G.993 started

 

kernel: Line 0: VDSL2 link down

 

 

 

And repeated indefinitely.

 

 

 

With the xDSL filter removed, the modem is able to synchronize fine.

 

 

 

If you'll excuse the crudeness of it, I quickly threw together a wiring diagram of sorts.

 

 

 

 

Any input on why it may not be working would be greatly appreciated.

This would seem like one of two things.

 

A, you have connected the splitter incorrectly/made a bad join

 

B, your filter is faulty.

 

 

 

 

 

Chances of a faulty splitter is rare, however; based off your drawing (i'm assuming colors are correct) this does match how a splitter is installed.

I had not considered a faulty filter, though as you say that would be rare.

 

 

 

I'll triple check the wiring/joins as soon as I get a chance, and yes, the colours in the diagram are correct.

 

 

 

Would I be correct to assume that because the phones are working, any fault in the wiring would have to be between the filter and modem?

What is your RJ11 pinout? Try an RJ45 socket and punch down on blue (pins 4+5)

Currently the RJ12 is connected directly to the filter via a cat5e cable. Removing the jack from the equation was one of the first things I did when I was trying to get a connection.

 

When it was connected, I had used the blue pins (4 & 5) as you said.

 

 

 

Current pinout on the RJ12 is White to pin 3 and Green to pin 4. I tried reversing this though it seemed to make no difference.

 

 

 

This all aside, I'm actually pretty impressed with the speed I'm getting without the filter.

 

Currently on profile 17a with a DL speed of 34.1mbps and an UL speed of 11.6mbps.

 

Line attenuation(0.1db) is 192 for download and 0 for upload.

 

Ping is 15ms.

 

 

 

However, though this is probably just a complete coincidence, ever since about 10:30pm last night, the Orcon DNS have not been working for me. Manually setting my computers to use the Google DNS works fine though.

If the modem works fine without the filter then you can be sure your filter wiring is the problem.

 

Those filters are extremely reliable so you should check that your connections are correct and sound.

 

Remember that only one output is filtered - the output to your modem should not be filtered so if you have the filtered output going to the modem it will not work.

Is there any way to tell which output is filtered? I simply followed the instructions printed on the filter itself. 

 

 

 

"Or/wh to LINE and Gr/wh to MODEM. Bl/wh to PHONE wiring."

 

 

 

I have installed a couple of these before and they all worked flawlessly, though my houses wiring is a bit more difficult to work with.

 

There is no ETP on the outside of my house, the line comes straight in and is terminated inside a BT master jack.

The incoming line is not filtered so you can connect your modem to that.

 

I think, from memory when I had analogue phones, that my filter was in line with the phones and my modem was connected to the incoming line.

So, If I am understanding you correctly, It could wired like shown without any ill effect?

 

 

 

(Again, please excuse my artistic talent)

 

 

 

 

If that is correct, why do the filters have an output specifically for the modem? Is it actually just a pass-through from the incoming line?

in the first style of these splitters, the ADSL2+ only ones, this is how they worked.

 

 

 

Things changed a little for the VDSL ones.

Interesting. I'll try wiring it like that next.

 

 

 

On that note, I had first attempted to install the filter before I had connected the modem for the first time. 

 

Now that I have connected it without the filter, should I wait for the ten day DLM training period to be over before disconnecting and rewiring?

 

 

 

I understand that you should disconnect the modem on a VDSL connection as little as possible, yes?

no thats not correct your first drawing is correct the xdsl jack comes off the filter. people are telling you do do it like that to check its working correctly before the filter

 

having it like the drawing above defeats the purpose of the filter, to separate/filter out the voice signal/interference for the xdsl modem

Sorry but the last post is, as far as I know, incorrect.
The filter filters out the digital signal from the analogue signal.
Wired incorrectly and the modem will not work.

I'll post an update once I've had a look at the wiring again.

I had a ~2 month old splitter die on me a few months back. The phone output on it just died completely. Quite random. Only one I've ever seen die.
