I'm about to go to Oz for 2 weeks or so.  I have a 2degrees mobile and also an iPad with 2 degrees SIM that I will take.  There's a possibility I might need to place long calls to NZ and receive long calls (from a 2degrees mobile).  Presumably, if I have an australian SIM, a 2degrees phone in NZ can call me for free, right?  Whereas If I am roaming with my NZ number, incoming calls get expensive.

The 2$ a day optus deal looks like a good deal.

Any comments or recommendations?

The 2degrees new $35 Aussie roaming pack lasts 14 days, has 1GB of roaming data, and unlimited voice and SMS.

I've always used the $2 a day Optus deal and it's worked out great. The 2Degrees $35 pack is no good to me as I'm not on a business plan.

The packs are available on consumer postpay also.

Ahh, but not prepay. There's always a gotcha!

We reduced the data roaming rates in the countries covered by the packs to 50c/MB even for prepay (10c/MB for postpay) so we're not leaving prepay completely out in the cold...

Correct, provided they're on the right plan.

Oh absolutely. I have no complaints with the offerings for prepay. (But if you did feel like offering the $35/14day roaming pack to prepay, I wouldn't complain!)

Looking at the conditions of my plan, I would have to agree with you.

If you need lots of data, get the Optus $2 per day plan and let people know your Oz phone number.

Optus can do this for you at the airport, they even change the SIMs for you. The $2 a day gives you 1GB of data each day (which my teenage daughter still managed to exceed but you won't) so it's something you can just use and never worry about.

Oh, and be sure that your phone is not locked to a NZ network before you go.

Also if you buy an Australian sim on the right plan you get "standard calling TO New Zealand mobiles included as free"

Standard calling is basically mobiles and land lines (ie not 0900 numbers etc)

I wend over in July & $40 got me 14G data, free Spotify Data, unlimited calling to NZ & Aussie Standard numbers for 28 days.

It was a deal  with Optus - just signed up at Brisbane airport when I landed.

Even managed to use the full 14G as I took my chromecast along and streamed Netflix from my phone on the last couple of nights :)
(note: to cast like this you will need 2 devices - one as a hotspot, the other to cast Netflix)

Might be a bit late but I recommend just grabbing a pocket WiFi with data bundle. They're pretty cheap and you can get some great data deals there. I've always found it better than roaming. I picked up a pocket WiFi with 4GB data for $39. Pay as you go/monthly plans have deals like 2GB for $15, 7GB for $30 and so on. This is through Vodafone Aus: http://www.vodafone.com.au/mobile-broadband/plans/state/sim/month-to-month/filter
