Hello

I've started to get frequent pauses in my movies while streaming from Google.  The device is an Xiaomi Mi Box with the ethernet connector and streams 1080p high bitrate movies from my server fine in kodi/plex and live tv using the live channels app but for whatever reason, google movies streaming is not good.  Tested on laptop, phone etc. and still the same issues, every 10 seconds or so it pauses like its struggling to buffer.

Other streaming apps are fine such as Youtube, twitch etc. so not sure why this is.  On VDSL with 37Mbps down and no downloads utilising the bandwidth.  Fritzbox 7390 had a fit the other night and screwed up but I doubt that it would make much difference as other services are ok.

Any issues I should be aware of?  Any trouble with the network?

Thanks,

Chris

Yes, haven't changed anything there. Are YouTube and play movies stored in the same cdn?

Sorry I can't walk you through this step by step but...

Identify the threads of the download and find the IP the data is coming from. Ping and/or tracert that to see if it's within the 2D network, or at least within NZ.

Do the same while playing popularyoutube videos. If the IP range is similar then you could be confident that the movies are being played from a local CDN.

If not, then either the service isn't (perhaps due to too small a node, not enough users, licensing issues?) or it's long tail content and the GGC node might either be not configured to cache with passthrough, or might simply not have the item in cache and the client is being directed off to another location.

Cheers - N

I'll have a go from my laptop with the right software to get the threads.  This is only a recent thing though, was fine until last week I think and is affecting all movies from google play that I have (3 of them), currently playing youtube dinosaurs for my son and there is no stutter.

Hmm are you still having trouble?

I'm on 2d also, but on their gigabit fibre plan, however I'm struggling to crack 50mbit down at the moment. It seems to be just a trickle, so not sure if something wider is happening perhaps?

Yep. its across all my Play Movies but only those.  Other streaming systems and the internet is generally fine.

@Linux 2d's own speed test server, usually I'd get 800-900 easily. Performance is otherwise unusually poor. I know it's not a good measure of the wider internet but it is handy to get a bit of a baseline.

All the usual caveats apply - tested over Ethernet etc. Haven't tested again this morning yet though.

I've just done a speed test, latency from the wired machine seems odd, 60-70ms from my address in Auckland to the various Auckland servers, much lower normally in the 10-20ms... trace routes to various sites though seem normal.
