Run down on issue, whenever I download a large file that has sustained internet speed over 500mbps after about 3+ minutes the download drops connection and then half (estimate) the internet is disconnected for 30 minutes, including the site I was downloading from.
Reset modem, ONT, PC nothing seems to fix the issue. Then magically about 30 minutes later everything starts working again.

Some sites that go offline:
Netflix.com (no TV for me)
Digg.com
Roblox.com (site works fine, however my son can't connect to any game servers)
venus.obtrix.net
My Amazon firestick no longer connects to amazon, so no tv for me.

However if I limit my download to 400mbps or less then everything is fine. However if I don't and say my game download from steam hits over 500mbps for longer than 3+ minutes, boom same issue again. It's pretty much guaranteed each and every time. It affects all my devices within my home network so it's not limited to one PC. I've even swapped out the modem and still the problem persists.

After looking through the traceroutes it appears anything that is routed through BE-101.bdr02.akl05.akl.VOCUS.net.nz [175.45.102.233] is causing the issue. So I would suspect there is a problem with a rateshaper (or something similar) that instead of slowing the connection down is actually misconfigured and drops anything from my IP. Because every time I have this issue precisely 30 minutes later the problem clears with no change on my end.

Here are some broke pings / traceroutes from my PC when the issue is present:

Anyone else having these issues? I've called Orcon support and been pretty much given the run around each time. Once they even said that I was over saturating my connection and that was the cause, even though I have the 950/450mbps plan.

Thanks for the report, It might be our upstream thinking its a DDoS. I will get our NOC to dig into it.

Can you send me your current IP address?

I've PMed you my IP. One thing to note, I'm FTPing using 8 threads via CUTEFTP, hence how I can hit over 500mbps. So possibly that may be it.

I used to get this with vodafones dhcp implementation although would be 5 mins downtime.

Will be interesting if this is flagging ddos detection...

Tried playing around. 8 ftp threads with 500+ mbps = issue

8 ftp threads at setting a hard d/l 400mbps cap = no issue

6 threads with no cap and 500+mbps = issue when hitting over 500mbps

Will continue to troubleshoot but I have to wait 30 minutes for the problem to clear to each time.

Ok did some testing and appears the max is 5 threads at once.

So no issues with 5 ftp threads at 500+mbps. Any more threads and the issue pops up at 6.

Hi MikeK

Nope they didn't. I found it too painful dealing with their "tech support". The last straw was when I called back for an update, and the support guy said they have discussed with me and wanted me to install some "tool" on my network so they could troubleshot. Strangely that was the first I've heard of that "discussion", and tried telling them anyone, anywhere can reproduce this issue on their network and it didn't need to be test via my Fritzbox. He still didn't seem to understand so I gave up.

I managed to get out of the early termination fee and just jumped ship. I get switched over this Friday.

The problem isn't just with multi-threaded FTPs, I believe its whenever you have too many connections out of edge router BE-101.bdr02.akl05.akl.VOCUS.net.nz.

I was ftping at 5 threads (tested ok before) then tried watching netflix on my firetv and boom got hit again. Very frustrating and it takes 30min to clear each time.

Update: After switching ISPs the problem is gone. So regardless of what 9 out of 10 Orcon Customer support reps say it is a problem with Orcons network. I hope they fix this soon as it will be impacting their customer base. So anything that uses too many multi threads will trip to DDoS protection and cut them off. So items like Multi-Thread FTP, browser download accelerators, hell to many netflix sessions will trip it.

I'm over at Spark now, I was thinking of bigpipe but I needed the VoIP phone. I was at 2 degrees before and to be honest they weren't too bad. I switched because I wanted to downgrade my speed and they wanted to charge me 50 bucks. I was off contract so I thought the best idea would be to just switch ISPs and save the 50 bucks. Under normal conditions that would have been sweet as. But as you read above 3ish weeks of trying to convince Orcon that the problem was within their network, then trying to get Orcon to fix the problem, dealing with their horrible customer support, and lack of communications it was just easier to switch ISPs in the end.

In the end I honestly can't say I would recommend Orcon to anyone.

I can post a screenshot when I get home later, but I ran a few tests this morning, and tested the multi-thread before I left for work and the speed seemed good. Of course I'll have to have a bit more of a play around tonight.

l43a2, from looking at your speedtest, I'm guessing your on VDSL?
