I'm looking at getting an orcon VDSL connection when we move to a new address with no fibre until 2020.  At least the exchange is literally over the road, so hopefully that means a short copper run.

I know from previous experience that getting support out of Orcon when not using their router is tricky, and we'd want their phone service anyway.

What router does Orcon give out these days?  Is it any good?  Can it do 5GHz?  11ac?

Hi there,

We supply the same modem for all of our plans except our Gigantic (gigabit) service - which is the Netcomm NF4V.

For our Gigantic plan, we supply the FRITZ!Box 7490.

All modems are provided on a free rental basis - so it won't cost anything other than postage and packaging, but we require it back if you were to leave.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Cam

Sorry to Hijack, @bameron I have some friends who have just joined Orcon on VDSL, and the NF4V just doesn't seem to be doing the job, but they'd like to use one of your modems to keep the phone setup nice and simple...

Is there a way they can get the Fritzbox without having to upgrade to a Gigabit plan when fiber becomes available?

Thanks!

It's not a hijack! I've heard similar things.  I don't want to sign a 12 month contract and be stuck with a lemon of a modem.

I'd encourage your friends to check out our wireless troubleshooting guide: https://help.orcon.net.nz/Technical-Support/Wireless/44711832/Wireless-troubleshooting-guide.htm and to reach out to our helpdesk on 0800 13 14 15 so we can take a look. There are the obvious factors like interference to consider, but the team can still take a look and see if any improvements can be made.

The FRITZ!Box device is offered only on the Gigantic plan - we aren't offering this on any other plans.

If you really wanted to, you could always turn off the wireless functionality of our modem and use your own router for Wi-Fi purposes - but personally, I've never needed to do that with either the Netcomm or the FRITZ!Box.

I'm putting my vote in for the quality of the NF4V. my favourite bridging modem!

full monitoring stack based on it running at home on my two.

Very little to no difference between the stock firmware and Orcons too which is great work compared to the amount of locking down and cosmetic work often done by others!
