I'm moving into a new rental, I signed up on Orcon's website on the 19th Nov for internet after they told me Fiber is available. So after checking the website yesterday the 20th it says that the "Scoping Date" date is tomorrow 22/11, so I pick the "evening" on their website.

 

I phoned them today to ask what time I can expect the Chrous technician and they said between 12-5PM??? I picked evening thinking evening as in after 5PM which is what I would consider "Evening" as I work a 8AM-5PM job. I then get told that they need to actually install the Fiber connection? So I guess that was a misunderstanding on my part.

 

To add insult to injury.. because my Fiber connection is to be installed on the 04/12/17 I do not qualify to have ADSL in the meanwhile as it is not a month or more wait, I mean come on that means I won't have internet for 8 days?

 

Can an Orcon rep please see this and grant me ADSL for the 8 days please?? frown

They have to pay Chorus to get that ADSL connection - they won't do it, because it'll cost them around $40-$50, for a week of service.

 

The "evening" thing is poorly worded, it should be afternoon - outside of emergency faults work, no contractors will be available after 5PM, the best you can hope for is a weekend install. The 12PM-5PM thing is because the job will have a between 12PM-5PM commit on it - all service orders are either morning or afternoon, and that's about as solid as you'll get it.

 

It's not Orcon's fault, it's how the system works for everyone. Unsure how you've been on Geekzone for this long and not seen the stream of complaints like yours :P

8 days is pretty good?

 

 

My house had fibre physically installed already when I purchased it and I waited a month for my connection to go live. I spent about 50 hours on the phone, and two days off work hanging around for people that never showed up.

 

 

I think most people here would agree that signing up on one week and getting it installed the week after is almost a miracle.

 

 

As has been mentioned, the ISP has to pay someone else for these services. It is not their fault.

None of your issues are Orcon related. They are LFC related - which region are you in? (@freitasm - always thought we should have that tagged under our profile and make it a compulsory field?)

8 days is dam good. You only requested this on the 19th and should have got on to it much sooner.

I'm just irritated that I won't have internet now and it could have been easily avoided, 8 days is to mean best case scenario as we all know how chorus operate. It's just a few misleading or poorly communicated things towards me.

I forgot to meantion that I was told I would be able to have ADSL while I waited, what the Orcon guy on the phone failed to meantion is that I only qualify for this if I am to wait for a while before getting connected.

I did not know it would cost them to activate the ADSL, in which case if I was offered it to pay extra I would to have internet. "Have ADSL while you wait-$40"

I just feel everything wasn't presented to me in a way that I understood that I would not have internet for x amount of time and if I do get internet connected in the time specified I will be grateful as it could be worse.

My post is mostly a frustrated rant. It's just a few things should have been made aware to me before signing up.

I agree having a where you are in NZ would be helpful, I was only able to confirm on the 19th with the landlord.

xDSL installs don't happen overnight either - you could easily be waiting 3-5 days for that.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that mate. This is a LFC or Chorus we are dealing with. Things happen, Atleast you can get ADSL now and if they dont cancel the order and get ADSL with someone like Bigpipe..

I was told it can take up to 10 days to get ADSL, I don't understand why it would take that long, the previuous tenants had ADSL, so the line is there and working, they just need to activate it on their end?

But an Orcon ADSL line may ULL which needs physical work by Chorus to activate... depends what ISP the previous tenant had.

I think I should just cancel the Fiber order and go with ADSL, seems to be the quickest way to actually get some form of internet.

Fibre can take months - in rare occasions, a year or more. Less than ideal, but that is the reality. Sometimes it can be done in a few days, but that is not common.

 

Ultimately, if you need a connection quickly, then relying on fibre isn't currently a great option - xDSL is generally far quicker to get as there is no consent and build process to go through.

There is a line of people and work to be done mate. You and everyone else :)
Up to ten days is so people do not start whinging after 48 hours (Doesn't seem to work) and also to cover post times for hardware, technician availability.

If the lines are still intact at the exchange then its a basic activation. (They take the lines off the mainframe after someone has closed their service with in a day or two. So chances are it needs someone to connect it physically)

For another alternative to ADSL - are you in an area where you can get Wireless Broadband?

 

While I was waiting for the Fibre to go ahead I ended up getting a Skinny Wireless Broadband modem to "tide us over". 
Best piece of advice I ever got.  It was ordered one day, arrived the next, plugged in and just started working.

 

Yes there is a limit, but it was sufficient for our needs.  YMMV :-)
