Hi guys,

I have just posted an update on our site about 5 new exchanges that have been unbundled:

Manurewa
Mt Eden
Remuera
Blockhouse Bay
Howick

ooooo WoW yet more dorkland exchanges thanks for the info Duncan ( NOT ) heres a suggestion hows about going to somewhere else's exchanges like hawkes bay for instance then maybe i might get excitted

I think this is the natural process of the "unbundling". Companies will invest where the return is and currently the big market is Auckland. Wellington and Christchurch would be next and then other areas later.

If you remember my rants I think LLU came too late - in my view it should only allow access to exchanges to companies that deploy a % of their equipments to other areas. For example you can have access to 80% of Auckland exchanges if at the same time you deploy to 20% in other areas.

Otherwise what you will see from Orcon and Vodafone and others is simply a gold rush to get Auckland done - and then wait for Telecom to deploy cabinets for only then start asking the government to force access to these other areas.

Natural enterprise. Nothing wrong. The government and regulators were dumb when they "thought" LLU. This should be good ten years ago, not now with new technologies.

Don't blame the ISPs now. Blame the people who could only fire at Telecom when LLU was being discussed, in the believe that ISPs would quicly deploy something in Balclutha.

The problem with other areas (then AKL,WLG, CHC) is quite simple - backhaul. Unfortunately at the moment it's cheaper to get transmission between Auckland and Sydney then Auckland and Wellington. For smaller cities the problem is even bigger, since there is only one potential provider - TCNZ. The alternative is to build own fibre network to those places. As one might imagine that's not exactly cheap exercise, or fast. So we'll have to wait to see the benefits of LLU in smaller cities.
I don't think forcing companies to build in non-profitable areas would do any good. Every investment has to return some profit over time, and that sort of restriction could significantly impact business case. Also, this way, when the numbers start to build up it will be easier for VF or Kordia to invest outside of major metro areas.

Quick note that we have also just added Birkenhead, if you are off the Birkenhead exchange you can order via the Orcon website now.
