I curently have an old Orcon plan (Browns Bay exchange but not elligble for +network) and it looks like Telecom
are installing fibre cabinet at end of street.

Will Orcon migrate me to the new cabinet and give me the benefit of the new speed at the same price?

or

Will I have to change to an Xtra plan?

If it is indeed a broadband equipped cabinet, you'll probably be migrated over to it at some point without any intervention required regardless of ISP.

what actually happens to those who are connected to LLU gear in an exchange and their cabnet is upgraded?

e.g I'm on Te Rapa exchange in Hamilton, map on vodafone's site says my exchange is in the list of exchanges to have their gear installed for Red Network, yet the telecom site says the cabnet I'm on just up the street here is due to be upgraded to one of the new fibre linked broadband cabnets in January 2009, will that automatically kill any chance of using a LLU provider unless they install their gear in the cabnet?

When I put my number in on the vodafone web site it said that although I was in the area for the Red network it was not available to me. Similar to the response that I get from Orcon

Cabinets are a pain for adsl 2+

They can be simple repeater stations allowing an adsl signal to be boosted by the cabinet to allow people further away form the exchange to get a decent signal. Alternatively Telecom some times install them in to large apartment blocks.

If the cabinet is a DSLAM then it in theory it can be upgraded to ADSL 2 but telecom would have to do this or allow access for a 3 party (orcon/iVODAhug) vender's to place there own equipment in it.

When that will happen is any ones guess. I have heard that some Telecom cabs can even be caped to 2m throughput per line so that would really suck if you where on it.

Thats all I know abut the Green boxes!!! And yea, I am stuck on one so no ADSL2+ for me1!~!!!!1`1`!~!!

The newer cabinets with DSL equipment inside are DSL2+. Check out the Telecom wholesales website.

Sweet so the answer to my problem is GTA a big truck and smack it in to the cabinet.....then they will install a shiny new one!!!!

I saw a presentation on the telecomwholesale site from this guy at chorus, the understanding I got is:

When the cabnet your on is upgraded to a new islam, it will be on a fibre backhaul to the exchange hence if you were connected to LLU gear you will have to go back onto Telecom gear. It seems to be if you want to get to LLU you need to live close enough to a exchange where the copper goes right into the exchange, not via a cabnet.
Correct me if I'm wrong...

Some very odd concepts in this thread, I guess its a pain if you want to sign up to a LLU plan with Orcon or Voda, but the reality is the reason for cabnetisation is that the current copper is too long, this will impact on who evers DSLAM you connect to if cabinets are not installed. The reason the cabinet is there in the first place is that the copper had to be consolidated at logical point from the exchange as suburbs moved out from the exchange.

They are not a pain they are a necessity, if you are suggesting that a 1.5km line with 15-17Mb/s performance on a Telecom wholesale DSLAM is a worse deal than a 4km line at 3-4Mb/s on a Orcon or Voda DSLAM then you are seriously deluded.

Hi Phil, yes well aware of the issues for DSL services that are feed through the cabinet from the exchange rather than from the cabinet. However the reason for the cabinet in the first place is because the line is undesirably long, so if you as a customer have a choice which service would you choose.

Soon as subLLU is sorted so access seekers can start selling pizza boxs the better I guess. :)
