Hi,

Considering switching over from IHUG to Orcons new high speed plans.

Im right on the border of Sunnyvale/Henderson, but looks like im covered by the Glen Eden exchange.

Is there anyway to tell how far away from the exchange I am...so I can get some kind of idea if switching over would be worth it??

Cheers

It may seem silly to suggest, but it should help:
Use the new checker facility on the for the vodafone red network. It has an embedded google map which shows the exchange and address, along with a boundary of the exchange coverage

no luck - seems like Glen Eden isnt listed there..... you'd think this info would be more easily available eh?

Check

(Edit:opps 0o0 beet me to it!)

http://hwiki.digitalsouth.net.nz/broadband/exchange_locations for locations and links to a map.

This is not a great indication of how far away you are as the cables them selves could take a dogs leg to get to you.

In your modem check what the Line attinuation is. This ranges form 24-64 (correct me if im wrong) 24 giving test results that tell you that you live in the Exchange and 64 being the furthest distence away from the exchange to be able to provide an ADSL signal.

Therefore the higher the attn the further away form the exchange you are.

Hope this helps.

thanks, my modem is telling me this:
Item
Downstream
Upstream
Unit
SNR Margin
12
35
dB
Line Attenuation
41
21
dB
Data Rate
4688
162
kbps
So, 41 down.....that means what...2kms?

41dB / 13.81 = 2.969 KM

Call it 3km and you will be pretty close

Awesome, thanks....so im guessing that isnt too bad....not great, but not bad.

In theory you should get a speed increase  be it 1MB or 10.

Not to sure on how you would calculate the attenuation to speed ratio for adsl 2 as u need to take into account the noise ratio and the state of the coper cables its connecting with.
