I am trying to find if there is a number range which is the least likely to ever have been used for cellular. I'm considering porting a 028 number from 2talk.

if you get a recycled number your not very likely to get unknown number text you and if you do get a lot maybe change it again try get a number up and running and just try it out before giving it to all your contacts just in case you need to change it again.

@MichaelNZ Huh?? If you are considering porting a number why do you need to know about number recycling / number ranges as you are taking a number you already have to 2Degrees. This makes no sense at all

I don't have a number to port right now. I will have to get one for this purpose.

My "recycled" number had a handful of queries when I first got it but ever since I have not. 
Not much of a big deal, Chances are the number you may get will never be contacted.
Maybe ask for an 029 from Vodafone?

Solution: Get VF to refund you your 20c, Move on and enjoy life.  Chances are if you get a new number it will be re-used too, Unless you go with a new /small provider who happen to get a new number range. All the big providers have so much churn it doesn't make sense not to recycle numbers.

I even remember recycling landline numbers when I worked in Telco.... It happens there is only so many number combinations allocated in NZ....

@michaelNZ Mike can not provide you a solution I have told you the best solution already ask for a refund of your 20 cents and move on with life

The fact is all providers recycle numbers. It is how they keep the numbers in NZ so short.

Figure this: Tourist buys sim, ditches sim, number never gets recycled then suddenly we've got massive numbers. It'll make sense to recycle that number for somebody else. Normally how it works (@linux can likely comment further) is it gets "held" for around a 90 days or even sometimes greater to ensure it is inactive and not receiving anything. Since you've got another thread open on the Vodafone side continue the discussion there. There isn't any need to have multiple discussions open about the subject.
