Nice... http://www.geekzone.co.nz/hellonearthisman/5205

Slingshot have release there new plans.

They four different plan models.

  •  2GBcap 256kbps/128kbps $29.95 with tolls and $39.95 without.
  •  5GBcap 256kbps/128kbps  with either +10GB data or $10 worth of toll calls. for $39.95 with or without tolls.
  •  5GBcap FS/128kbps  with either +10GB data or $10 worth of toll calls. for $49.95 with or without tolls.
  •  5GBcap FS/FS  with either +10GB data or $10 worth of toll calls. for $59.95 with or without tolls.

These plans have,  free off peak data between 1AM and 7AM and Databanking.

Databanking,  if you buy extra databocks then these datablocks don't expire. Your monthly data cap still expires like oldn times.

Datablock costs are going up with 50GB block now costing $50 up from $40 with their old plans & no new 100GB sized datablocks.
The lack of larger datablocks does stop users seriously inversting in this data banking concept as they are only sell block sizes that would be used within month by the average user.

This increased cost has been made to offset the free data between 1am and 7am, if you up to surfing at those times or have your download organised for those times.

Data Block Price
5GB$10
20GB$25
50GB$50

WAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOO :-)

YAYA horaaayyyy

My ability to download masses of torrents has just jumped to a whole new level. I have just downloaded a time based throttling plugin for azureus although i will still probably be buying about 50gb of data anyway.

This has made my week

They are also looking at providing a 100GB datablock for (rumoured) $80,  which would bring it back into the old pricing scale of 50GB for $40 and that Doesn't have to be use for a year.  That would make the plans just sweet as.

Slingshot only shapes the data when the system is under high load, like at peektimes.
Some people with FS connections get around 2GB a nite?
But it's only been out a few of days and is has a few issues.

I was going to say "2GB a night" well I can do that in about a hour.
Well if all goes well next week ill be on slingshot and will be able to say how much i get, altho i don't think I will be able to find enough stuff to download thou the whole night. (unless I get a few Linux distros)

I don't have the plan, and only took the example from from user in the Slingshot forums.  I think some said they could get 170Kbps,
meah, it's not like light, which is a known constant, it's the internet.
I want to change to the new plan,  but am waiting for the teething problems to be resolved, (like the freedata was still being removed from caps)

I have done 14GB in a night of direct downloads, plus backed up Mum's computer over the internet as well. I am on slingshot already.

Scheduling between 1am and 7am will make that so much cheaper :-)

cheers

Wow all I can say is thank the lord for Telstra cable. I get 900-1000Kbps and have to limit my downloading so I dont go to far over my cap each month.

Slingshot was looking into providing 100GB datablocks,  for use with their new databanking concept.
But yesterday, the big No came through.   So the internet is becoming more costly, breaking the trend of the last  10+ years of cheaper data.

The main reason for the higher costs,  the ISP wants more money.  They want to build a bigger better network and it's down to the users to fund it.  I prefer to pay for a system that I'm using and not for something that may come.  Or to pay for court costs internal battles like the  Slingshot - CallPlus battle over 2Talk (6months of time/money wasting).   I guess that fight show's where their heads are at,  to busy wasting money, trying to rip off their own partners.  And we who suffers when the parent's fight, it's the children/users.

As for the speeds,  I have also heard of people going through 6GB in one night.  It was in a story of a user, who moved house and upgraded his plan to the new one's.  Only to discover that he got moved out,  but was still on the old plan, and used all his 6GB cap on one night.   SS did give him a 50GB datablock to cover his use,  but it's a flat connection and they wanted to use the free time @6GB a night,  So in ten days, Slingshot will start milking that cow and the poor user has to wait another month before he can get his plan changed again.  It's a telecom issue as to the reason for the delays,  but it's sad for the user,  he was assured it would all change over on a set date and has been ripped off in  the mean time.  I don;t think that customer found it a better place,  he also lost the people he had on his Terra byte deal when his address changed. The others he was going to sign up to the Terabyte offer, have now gone to Xnet  because of these issues.

I'm disappointed with Slingshots lack of vision and services regarding the last round of new plans.  And think Xnet is starting to look like the better place.

Linking to my thread eh ;)

I do have to say that I am really happy with the internet service Slingshot have given me over the past year and a half. However, it seems like they have some serious issues whenever you want to get something changed. I just happened to strike most of them all at once.

Was a great story.  I'm poor so could not have absorbed the extra costs.  Glad it all ended happy and that moves have been made to prevent it happening again.

Any word on naked dsl getting data banking and free offpeak? I am holding back on downloads waiting for it since it will make keeping a good ratio a lot cheaper.

You might want to have a read of this thread over at GP:

http://www.gpforums.co.nz/thread/319260/?s=

It seems as though Slingshot's Naked DSL is being treated very much as the poor cousin compared to their standard "Broadband" offerings which must be purchased in conjunction with a phone line rental.

Why they would choose to do that is anybody's guess.  Perhaps the margins on Naked DSL are just too tiny to be bothered with???
