This morning had phone out and no Internet (fibre) so rebooted the router and the phone came back but still no web pages.

Help desk answered within a few seconds (ups to them), and said no general problems so I tried pinging an external IP no. and that was fine, so, DNS problem. Confirmed by adding google server to adaptor on comp and OK.

Problem was that the DNS settings in the router had been wiped so wonder how this could have happened? Help desk person said my connection had gone down at 5 this morning but how would that have cleared my DNS settings. Firmware update??

Just wondering is all.

First I updated your post - it is DNS not DNA ;)

It'll likely have been a reprovision of your router from Orcon maybe combined with a firmware update.

Thanks, Michael. Bit embarrassing the DNA slip!! I am heavily into genealogy and DNA checking ATM so I must have it on my brain!

I am sure I talked DNS to the help desk!

Yea, was thinking along the same lines. Not sure what the firmware ver was before but it is now GURNV5.OT132A-8-NC.Orcon-R5B032.EN

DNS settings are supplied by the BNG when the modem authenticates. So generally not hard coded into the modem.

Seems very odd that the modem was not picking up the DNS settings.

Thanks Sounddude. It is a bit concerning that it needed 'fixing' as I always think of how my wife would cope with these things. Very badly, I am sure, but not her fault that she would flounder with anything like this. She wouldn't be alone.

I just wonder at her conversation with the help desk person... It wouldn't be a great experience for either of them!! I have told her how to turn the router off and on but that wouldn't have fixed it in this case and the help desk would have struggled as well. "Have you tried adding the google DNS server into the Internet Adaptor?". No need to go further with this conjecturefrown

Do you have an IP address hard coded into the Internet Adaptor? or is the PC doing DHCP?

Router doing DHCP. Both IP and DNS on adaptor were/are on Obtain automatically.

Went back to router settings and found I had entered the DNS settings under the static DNS section then saw that the LAN/DHCP table had DNS settings and these are set to the router LAN address. So, my statement that the DNS entries had been wiped was false. I was looking at the wrong ones, it seems.

I have removed the static DNS entries and had to select DNS Server Interface from available WAN interfaces. I selected eth1. The ipv6 obtain DNS box now has UFB/eth1 - not sure if this changed or not.

It is working fine now.

Bit confusing as to exactly what was wrong as all I can be certain of is that the initial static DNS entries caused it to work.

Sounds darned confusing - hope it makes sense to you, SD!
